"No, no, no. You don't understand! I can't wait that long," I yelled frantically into the phone, no longer masking my location by whispering. My body was glistening from sweat. I had been crouched and crammed into the small space for way too long.

"Yes, ma'am I understand that. I assure you help is on the way." The woman's voice came out calm. Unfazed. She was simply reciting what she had been trained to say in her way-too-many years of schooling.

"NO! Why won't you help me?! I need help now, he's coming now!" I listened carefully for the sounds of the metal bending and deforming. The one bright side of being in the vents: I at least knew where he was.

"Ma'am please remain calm. Help will arrive shortly. In the meantime, I ask that you please be patie–" It was too late. My phone clattered loudly against the vent, and I was being dragged away by my feet.

------ 30 days earlier------

Today was really no different from any other day. Sure, the air was crisper than normal, and yes, I was an ocean away from my own country. But those were common occurrences, really. Days truly don't change very much when the same dull feeling accompanies each one.

I slid into my Lyft, smiling briefly at the driver before settling in.

"Where to?" he asked, his British accent pleasing my ears.

"The courthouse downtown."

"Gotten yourself into some trouble, have yuh?"

"No. It's a law internship."

"That explains your accent."

"You're the one with the accent," I retorted.

"When you're in England, you're the one with the accent."

"Fair point."

"You staying here long?" He carefully maneuvered into another lane, even though there wasn't space for him. He was an aggressive driver.

"A month. So, not really."

He nodded, but our conversation ended there. I gazed out the window, weirded out by being on the wrong side of the road. I watched all the people walking along the streets, going into shops without a care in the world. I rolled my eyes and went on my phone for the remainder of the ride.

"Alright, doll. You're here." He placed the car in park.

"Thank you very much... uh.."

"James."

I smiled a little, then slid out of the vehicle. I took a deep breath, then walked into the courthouse.

"So, that's the place. Why'd you choose to study law here? It's different in your country," Rebecca asked after finishing giving me a tour. She was my supervisor for the duration of my trip.

"I wanted to visit England and I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about law in general." I had practiced that response so many times.

She accepted my answer, but didn't reply.

"Let's get into it, why don't we," she said as she pulled out a stack of papers.
