Chapter Two
The day flew by after my first class. It was a whirlwind of students, teachers and trying to find the correct classroom. By the time lunch came around, I was extremely tired. I made my way down the stairs from the second floor. I had asked someone where the lunchroom was located and they had given me directions.
As soon as I made it to the first floor, I took a left and made my way down a long hallway. Based on what the girl in my class had told me, I would see the lunch room doors on the right side of the hallway if I just continued to walk.
I saw them and watched as the students entered the double doors. It was like a stampede, students rushing to get into the lunch room for some much-needed rest and relaxation. I joined the line of students entering the cafeteria and slowly made my way into the room.
Once I did, I stopped in my tracks. The lunchroom was huge too, at least thirty tables placed throughout the giant room. To my right was the line for lunch, and to my left against the wall was a stage.
My eyes wandered around the room looking for somewhere to sit. The tables were beginning to fill with people. Friends sat near friends and I found myself feeling out of place. Where would I even sit?
"Hey, Kaylee!" I turned when I heard someone shout my name. You could barely hear the voice over the roar of students talking all at once. It was Alex, and he waved me over once I met his eyes.
I made my way over to a table that he was currently sitting at. He pats the spot next to him and I sat down. He turned to look at me.
"So how is your first day going?" He asked and I held back a sigh. It had been rough so far but I wasn't going to tell him that.
"Good, how's your day so far?" Alex began talking animatedly about his classes and I listened politely. He ran one hand through his hair as he spoke.
"Hey, Alex who's this?" My whole body stiffened as I heard someone's voice behind me. I knew that voice . . . I swallowed and my head went down. I stared down at the table and kept quiet.
"This is Kaylee guys. She's new here." Alex didn't seem to notice my sudden change in mood. I didn't hear the guy behind me move, I felt it. He made his way around the table and then there was silence.
"Kaylee?" He questioned and I looked up to meet his eyes. I knew at that moment that he had realized what I had. We knew each other.
"Kaden," I whispered his name and his eyes widened in what I assumed to be shock. He was silent for a moment, his mouth opening and closing. Then he stuttered.
"How, why, what are you doing here?" He paused and sat down at the table. "I haven't seen you since. . ." He trailed off and realization entered his eyes. Yep, I thought to myself. That's right you haven't seen me since that night.
Kaden still looked the same. His hair was dark brown, so dark that it looked almost black. His hair curled around his ears and was messy. His dark blue eyes watched me and I watched him back. He was wearing a leather jacket and looked all the bad boy that I remembered him to be.
"You guys know each other?" Kaden and I both nodded. "Cool, where do you know each other from?" I swallowed, waiting for Kaden to tell my secrets. Waiting for him to tell everyone why the loser left her old school and was homeschooled for a year.
"We go way back." He was watching me with dark eyes and I stared at him in surprise. That was the only explanation that he gave. Alex seemed to take the hint and moved on, talking about something else.
I tried to pay attention to what Alex was saying, but all I could feel was Kaden's stare on my face. I turned to look at him and met his deep eyes again. For a second, I thought I was crazy. I hadn't known for sure if he was staring at me, but I had sworn that I felt his eyes.
"Hey man," Ian sat next to Kaden and slapped a hand on his back. "See you met my friend Kaylee." Kaden, Alex, and I both looked straight at Ian. He was grinning from ear to ear and then waved at me. Ian's eyes were calculating as he stared straight at me.
I didn't like Ian, there was just something about him that was off. I tried to hold back the shiver that wanted to run down my spine. Creepy.
"We're not friends," I replied. Both Alex and Kaden laughed loudly, gaining the attention of students near us. I hadn't brought anything to eat today and at that moment I wished that I did. I wished that there was something else I could do besides stare at the men surrounding me.
"Ouch, I'm hurt." Ian put his hand to his chest dramatically. Both Alex and Kaden smiled at him, and Kaden pushed him.
"Quit fooling around man," Kaden told him. How had I ended up at a table with Kaden and Ian? Life was so unfair, I had to have the worst luck in the world.
"Hey Kaylee," Alex interrupted their conversation and I turned my eyes to his. His light blue eyes were sparkling. "We're going bowling today. You should come with." I immediately shook my head.
"I'm not good at bowling," I replied and Alex laughed. He didn't seem bothered by the fact that I wouldn't be any good. His blue eyes continued to sparkle as he smiled at me.
"I suck too. We mostly just go there to hang out." Kaden jumped in the conversation and I swallowed.
"Who's all going to be there?" Alex's fist pumped in the air in victory. I guess he assumed that I was going to go.
"The three of us and some girls." I hesitated, not really sure I wanted to meet any girls yet. Girls were known for being petty and ruthless when provoked. Would they be nice to me or would they shun me immediately? I squared my shoulders and straightened. Who cares? I was going to go out and make friends. I finally nodded in agreement.
"Sure, I'll come." Ian, Kaden, and Alex both cheered. I glanced at them all and shook my head, a small smile tugging on my lips.
Hopefully, I won't regret this.
