Sabrina's POV

It was a warm Friday afternoon, the second to last week of eighth grade. I had just gotten off of my school bus. My mother was sitting next to my 10 year old brother, Sam, on our front porch. This was unusual.

"Hi mom.. Hi Sam..." I greeted as I walked up the porch steps.

My brother said "hello" back, but my mother cut right to the case. "Sabrina, Sam, we need to talk." my mother said in a soft tone.

She headed inside leaving Sam and I outside. We both exchanged the 'do you know what's going on?' look before we went inside.

I tossed my backpack in front of the coat closet and took off my shoes.

We all sat at the dining room table. Sam and I sat on one end of the table while our mother sat on the other. A few minutes after three my dad came home from work. He immediately sat down at the table next to mom, instead of going upstairs and changing into something comfortable.

My mother let out a sigh, "we're moving." she told us.

My mouth opened about to say something, but I couldn't think of any words. My head started to pound, my chest felt like it was caving in. I could feel the tears form in my eyes.

"I got a new job offer," my dad explained, "it pays more and wi-"

"Where are we moving to?!" Sam blurted out. "I'm sorry." he apologized with a shaky voice.

"Los Angeles, California" my mom told us as she was trying to make eye contact with us.

"That's almost 3,000 miles away!" my brother argued.

"We know... We're already set, we just have to pack. The new house is bought and move in ready. It's a really lovely house." my mother said

"So is the house we have now!" my brother pointed out.

"That is true but the new house is in the middle of your father's job, your new school, and Sabrina's new school."

"And yet you didn't think about asking us first?" I finally said.

She turned her head towards me.

"We thought you two would be happy about this.."

"What would make you think we would be happy about moving? Sam is going into middle school. And I'm going into high school! But now we both have to start in a whole new school, make all new friends, and try to fit in. It's LA mom! It's not like Rhode Island."

"You can be mad at us all you want. You can even argue with us. But this move is happening."

"When?"

"The end of the school year"

"how long did you know about this?"

"I knew about the job offer for a month, I thought about it and I agreed to it just a week ago" my dad answered.

I sighed. "Fine"

"I'm going to get dinner ready, be back at the table around 6:10" my mom told all of us as we were dismissed from the family meeting.
