I crept down the creaky, wooden stairs. Every time the floorboards squeaked I would flinch and wait a second until I was sure they hadn't heard me.

The house was dark as I tried to navigate my surroundings, careful not to trip down the stairs.

I sighed as I finally made it to the bottom. Grabbing my cloak, I left the old house. I embraced the sudden sense of freedom. It was pitch black outside. The coldness instantly numbing my cheeks and hands but I didn't care. This is what I wanted.

No one ever dared venture outside when it was pitch black. The thought of what was awaiting them was too horrific to even think about.

Vampires were the main threat to our lives.

I had never seen a vampire but I knew they were out there. From what I had heard they were beautiful creatures, their skin flawless and eyes so captivating you couldn't move- like a dear caught in headlights.

They were vicious beings who didn't feel emotion or pain. They could compel a person to do anything they wanted of them, whether that be to feed or use you as a slave, to serve their king.

However, they also had a main weakness. They could burn in the sun if exposed. There was another way to kill a vampire but it was extremely dangerous because it meant having to be really close to them...

You could chop of their heads.

Runes were creatures enslaved to the vampires. The vampires used them to be their eyes during the day.

The runes were able to glamour themselves into looking like deadly creatures and even surpass as human. They had superhuman speed like vampires. Apart from that runes were pretty easy to kill just like humans.

But none of them compared to the Wolven people. People that could shift into wolves.

They were more powerful and had less weaknesses than vampires and Runes combined. They controlled the entire kingdom and used us to serve them in exchange for keeping the Vampires away along with the Runes. Humans had known no other way for over two millennials.

The Wolven people were ruled by the Wolven King. Wolven's followed his every command. He was said to be cold and vicious. Still I had never been close enough to a Wolven to know much about them. I had always just watched them from afar.

Knowing all I knew the night never seemed to frighten me. I loved the night, it felt serene and calm. My entire being felt powered, my skin tingling with anticipation as I would look up to the night sky.

Making my way down the narrow path, I kept silent. I listened out for anything that could be nearby, I had excellent hearing, better than most people I knew. The sound of wind blowing through trees, owls, frogs croaking. But nothing that felt threatening.

I held my cloak tight around my body to keep myself warm.

Finally making it to the narrow woods I breathed in cold, fresh air. A damp smell filing my nostrils. I sighed in bliss. This is where I was supposed to be. I knew it was.

If my aunt, Helena knew where I was she would have a panic attack. She feared the outdoors, more than anyone else.

Her husband, my uncle, had been murdered by a vampire when he was on his way home from hunting.
