1965. Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brendon pov

When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had two things on my mind.

Ryan Ross and a ride home.

The boy was a good looking Soc, but something about him was so much more than that. He was sitting in front of me at the movie house, and I had trouble focusing when he was around me. I don't know why he makes me feel that way, it makes no sense. He's just some good looking Soc. He hates me, though. Why? Because that's just how things work around here. Socs drive tough cars, dig the Beatles, and wear madras. Us greasers dig Elvis, wear blue jeans, and grease our hair to look tough.

I always got real nervous without my gang. I have two brothers, Dallon and Josh. Dallon is my oldest brother, and he's real tough. He has these cold, icy blue eyes and long greased hair that has a mind of it's own. He's tall, he works full time, and has to take care of me and my other brother, Josh.

Josh is my 16 going on 17 year old brother. He has a long, curly hair, and his head is shaved on the sides. He looks tough. He's got these soft eyes, and he works at a gas station. He dropped out of highschool to make us some more money. That and, well, he just isn't the brightest (if you aren't counting his smile). We get along just great, even though he'd never crack open a book or watch a movie in his life. Dallon just can't stand me. He has no understanding for stuff I like. He could care less for a story, and he treats me like I'm 6, not 14. Josh is always so happy-go-lucky, while Dallon hardly smiles. I made my way to the gas station to find Tyler. He's my main buddy in our gang. He doesn't get along with his folks very well, they hardly notice he exists unless they're beatin' him. He's a real fragile boy, scarred for life. A couple Socs beat him up once. The guy had these rings on, and it left a scar on his face. He's got soft facial features, and his hair ain't too greasy. Just a regular amount.

"Hey, greaser!" A soc shouted from behind me. That didn't make me feel too hot.

Just keep walking.

There was a red corvair following me, so I walked a little faster. I wasn't about to get jumped and beat as bad as Tyler.

The Socs are wild. I mean, we're wilder than middle class, but we're not as wild as them. They get editorials in the paper for being a disgrace one day, and a legend the next. We're kind of like hoods. We steal, drive beat up cars, hold everyone up in gas stations, and have ourselves a little gang fight every once in a while.

I was lost in thought, so now 4 Socs are piling out of the red corvair. I'm two blocks away from home, I can make it.

Maybe not.

I could've made a run for it. I could've gotten help. But according to Dallon I never use my head. So I just stood there, terrified. I could never hurt a guy, how am I supposed to defend myself? Josh's best buddy Pete once beat up four guys with a broken bottle. I can't do that.

A Soc I knew by the name of Patrick stepped up to me and gripped my hair. Since I'm not using my head, I just stood there.

"Hey, hood.." He said in a bittersweet tone. "Me and my buddies are gonna do you a favor. How bout we just cut off this greasy hair. Sound good Frank?" He pulled out a pocket knife, and turned to his friend.

"Maybe just bellow the chin..." The boy, frank grinned. Then I snapped out of it and realized they could kill me.

"N-No." I stepped back and bumped into, you guessed it, Ryan Ross. I sent us flying to the ground, and he pinned me down on the floor. God, why does this make me feel funny instead of scared? Maybe both?

Once I stopped thinking about him and the knife was coming closer. I shouted for help. I shouted for Dallon, Josh, Tyler, anybody.

"Shut up, hood! Someone shut him up!" Ryan said. The guy I now knew as Frank put his hand over my mouth and I bit it.

"Ow! mother-someone get a towel or somethin!" Another guy with tough red hair put a towel over my mouth, and they began laughing as I struggled under Ryan's grip.

"Move, Ross! I'm giving the kid a trim!" He was just about to cut my hair until loud stomps were heard. They made a run for it, leaving me confused. Then I felt Dallon lift me by the armpits.

"You alright, Brendon? God, why weren't you using your head? Are you ok?"

"I'm alright Dallon, just quit shakin me!" He said me down to sit on the floor and said sorry. But I knew he wasn't sorry. Dallon's never sorry. He's six foot four with a heart of stone, just like his eyes. Josh and the rest of the gang caught up to us.

"Hey, Bren, you alright? They cut you up kinda bad back here." Josh said, bringing a white towel up to the back of my head.

"I'm not cut, am I?" He looked at me like I was an idiot and showed me the now bright red towel.

"You're bleeding something fierce." I felt my eyes water. Why now? I shouldn't cry in front of Dallon. It just isn't right.

"Hey, Brendon. You're alright, they just spooked you a little." Josh ruffled my hair a little and I wiped a tear from my cheek.

"You guys are idiots." Dallon scoffed. He probably would've knocked our heads together if I wasn't bleeding. He's right. Josh has no reason to care for me at the moment. I'm not beat up as bad as tyler when we found him in a lot one day, so I have nothing to cry about. Tyler looked at me with his round eyes, but didn't say a word.

"Hey, let's head to the gas station." Pete said. We all began to follow him. Spencer and Josh stood beside him. Life for Spencer is one big joke. He likes mickey mouse and does nonsense for the fun of it. He's got no job, either. Jon was walking behind me. He's always around Tyler. He's usually pretty care free, but he has this new protective bond after what happened to the guy, and I get that.

Our gang is a little complicated, and I'm real different compared to them. It's alright though, because we got each other's back like any gang would.

I'm just a little different.
