I craved silence.
There is a certain peace that comes only from absolute silence. That peace is unobtainable, however, because we live in a world that seems to revolve around noise. People are in love with the sound of their own voices, because it seems to calm the fear of oblivion that comes with silence. They are afraid of what would happen if they could no longer hear their own thoughts spoken aloud to their vain ears that crave the reassurance that they are important.
Why else would clocks tick if not to satisfy the need for sound? Sound is something that we as humans crave because it calms us down. We fear silence because we associate it with being empty. We could not function without the ticking of clocks that are counting down the time until even noise won't be able to save us from the inevitable oblivion that comes with death and whatever awaits us afterward, if anything. Our hearts beat in our chests to a rhythm that we cannot hear or understand, reminding us that we are alive even though we can only hear one instrument in an orchestra.
He gave me the silence that I craved.
All it took was that one punch that made my vision turn black to take away the noise that always followed me like an inescapable shadow. The last thing I heard was his voice as he frantically paced around my body, unsure of what would happen next. His desperate words echoed in my mind before I faded into that dreaded oblivion.
"I'm so sorry."
"Forgive me."
"It won't happen again."
"For the love of God, Tyler, don't close your eyes."
"I love you."
And then there was silence.
It's funny how quickly your desires change once you finally experience that sensation that you craved for so long. All I had wanted was silence, but once it suddenly came upon me in a wave, I was drowning in it. Memories washed over my tired mind as I frantically tried to escape it.
