Nate and I walked into his house, Nate looking around as if a ghost would appear any minute.
"Good afternoon, Kat. How was your day?" Mrs. Charles- I mean Pam- said when she saw us enter.
"Great. Really great. How was your day?"
"Boring. Mr. Charles won't be joining us for dinner tonight but he really wanted to be here. The food will be ready in five minutes."
"Mom, I have a question. How come you call Katherine "Kat" but you refuse to call me "Nate"."
Pam shook her head. "Darling, you don't want to get into this. Do you want me to call you by your full name instead?"
Doesn't she already call him by his full name?
"No, Mum. I am quite fine. I think I hear the microwave going off."
"I'm going to go check on the chicken. You can sit in the meanwhile."
We sat in the living room and I asked Nate, "What did your mother mean by calling you your full name?"
"My full name is Nathaniel but I begged my mother to change my name but she refused to so she agreed to call me 'Nathan'."
"Why would you do that? Nathaniel is a great name."
"You don't like your name either so don't tell me anything."
"Ok, fine. That was hypocritical, I guess. But just so you know, I have an uncle named Nathaniel and he likes his name."
"Did he tell you that?"
"Well, no but- ugh whatever. You're so difficult!"
"Dinner's ready!" Pam shouted from the kitchen.
"May the horror begin." Nate muttered.
We walked to the dining table, Nate pulled out my chair for me to sit and then walked to his to sit. His mother came out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of something.
"The food tastes delicious." I complimented Mrs. Charles.
"Thank you. When I was smaller, I really wanted to be a chef but then I changed my mind and I wanted to be a model. I had the looks and the body." Pam said while Nate cringed.
"Mom, you don't need to share your young days with us."
I kicked Nate's foot under the table. He's so rude to his mother! God, I am such a freaking hypocrite!
"That's ok, Pam. You can continue."
"Well, I changed my mind again so now I'm a real estate agent."
I took a sip of my drink while Pam continued, "Speaking of modelling, did Nathan ever mention that he used to be a pageant boy. You can see his tons of trophies in his closet. He hides them in there."
"Wow. Nate? A pageant boy?"
"I told you to don't believe anything." Nate said.
"If I find trophies in your closet, would I still have to believe you?"
"No, because you won't find any."
"Well, you kids have fun. I have an early day tomorrow. Good night."
She took the dirty dishes and carried them to the kitchen.
"What do you want to do now?" Nate asked.
"Well, it's a school night so I can't stay long. You know what I have a craving of?"
"What?"
"Monopoly!"
