Chapter Six

-Blane's POV-

After nearly an hour of me pacing back and forth in the hallway in front of the infirmary room, the door finally opened, revealing a grim-faced doctor. I knew in that moment, that the news I was about to hear wouldn't be good.

"I am so sorry, Alpha, we did everything we could to bring her back, but she had already lost too much blood and her brain had gone too long without oxygen. We tried giving her a blood transfusion as soon as we could and everything else possible to try bring her back, but it was too late. Her body suffered tremendously with the amount of blood taken from her. She also had a broken wrist; it seems that the vampire held her pretty tightly. Again, I'm so sorry for your lose. May our Luna rest in peace."

With that, Sam walked away with one final sorrowful look at me, leaving me in the doorway as the rest of Sam's medical team cleared the room and I was left alone with the still body of my mate.

Sam's words kept echoing in my head as reality slowly set in. My mate was dead. There was no saving her. I couldn't muster any more growls, I just felt complete emptiness inside of me. I numbly walked towards the hospital bed where my mate laid, her skin looking sickly white against the white sheets she laid upon. Her long brown hair a mess on the pillow, her eyes closed. Eyes I didn't even know the color of. Yet despite all that, she still looked like an angel resting peacefully.

I slowly crawled into the small hospital bed with my mate and curled up around her body and held her tightly to me as the silent sobs started. I had never felt my wolf this far back in my mind, completely silent mourning his mate. Those brief few seconds we felt the sparks of touching our mate, were a blessing and a curse. A blessing because we finally got to experience one of the best things a werewolf can experience in their entire lives and a curse, because a bond was established on first contact and the wolves inside us would never be able to recover if the mate is lost.

Hours had passed and I still hadn't yet moved from the position from when I first crawled into the bed, holding my mate. I had stopped crying for a while now, no tears left to be shed. Mason was the only one brave enough to dare mind link me, informing me Luca and the others failed to track down the vampire that attacked my mate, they had apparently lost his scent in a nearby town and were unable to pick it up again. I was beyond furious, but I lacked the energy and a deep enough care to currently do anything about it, I didn't reply to Mason and blocked my mind link to the rest of the pack, not wanting to be bothered.

The sun was just rising when Sam entered the room, not surprised at all to see me still with my mate. Sam seemed to hesitate to come any closer, and almost pained with what she needed to say next.

"Alpha, I think it's time for you to let her go. We'll handle what needs to be done next and give her the funeral she deserves."

At the mention of a funeral, I snarled at the doctor, far from ready to let go of my mate.

"Alpha, please. You have to eventually. I'm sorry that this has happened." Sam pleaded softly.

I was about to snarl again, when my wolf perked up for the first time in hours. He caught on before I did but I suddenly noticed where my skin made contact with my mate's, sparks were slowly shooting to life. I at first couldn't believe it, that it was just a figment of my imagination, my wolf grasping for any reason to not have to give up our mate, but the sparks were really there as I moved my hand up my mate's arm.

Sam started stepping closer to the bed, "It's time Alpha."

This time I growled in warning, the need to protect my mate strongly kicking in again. "She's not dead Sam."

"Yes, she is, she has been for hours now. You need to accept that and let her go, I'm sorry." Sam gave me a sad look, bordering on pity.

Ignoring the look she was giving me, I replied "No, I mean she's not dead anymore. The sparks just started again. Come check for a pulse. I don't know how this is happening, but I'm telling you, the sparks just started again a couple moments ago."

With a look of disbelief, Sam stepped forward and put her fingers up against my mate's neck, and slowly her face changed from disbelief, to shocked surprise.

"There's a faint pulse, slowly getting stronger. How is this possible?" The doctor had a faraway look, the shock on her face evident.

I was about to reply that I too, had no idea how this was happening, when the scent of my mate caught my nose. Still the same sweet smell it was before, but underneath it ever so faintly, a new scent was emerging, intertwining with her current scent and turning into a slightly altered scent. It was the scent of vampire and I thought I would instinctively want to recoil from the scent, my wolf however, instantly accepted it.

"Vampire." Was all I said in response to Sam.

"What?"

"Can't you smell it now? She smells of vampire, it's her own scent."

Sam took in a deep breath through her nose, and her eyebrows raised in shock. "She's turned? How is this possible? There was no vampire blood found in her mouth, she didn't consume any, she shouldn't have been able to change."

It was true, to change a human, one had to be completely drained of blood and fed the blood of the vampire that drained them. They will appear dead for several hours as their body undergoes the change, and eventually awaken as a youngling vampire.

"I don't know how this is even possible, but all that matters to me is that my mate is no longer dead."

After several moments deep in thought, a dawning look of understanding appeared on Sam's face.

"What is it? What did you just think of Sam?" I questioned her urgently.

"It's very unlikely, but I think there could be only one possible explanation for this Alpha..."

"What?" I was now desperate to know.

"It's a long shot, and still around a hundred years too early... but the only human that could possibly just change from a bite alone, would have to be the Chosen One."

I sat back in stunned silence as I thought over Sam's words. Though hard to believe, I could feel it deep within my soul that it was true, my mate was not only special to me and the werewolf kingdom, but the entire supernatural world, as well as the balance between good and evil.

"Is there a way to truly confirm that?" I asked.

"We wait until she wakes up and I could possibly confirm with blood testing. But the real answer will be what happens when you mark her. If she is the Chosen One, then the mark should change her to a wolf too."

I spent the rest of the day waiting patiently by my mate's side, her breathing returned to a regular pace, and though still pale, she no longer had a sickly appearance. I should have been repulsed from her being a vampire, I thought I'd be having some sort of internal war, but all I could feel for my mate was a deep devotion and the start of what surely must be love as our bond continued to deepen every moment our skin touched. I couldn't wait for her to open her eyes and see what color they were, to hear the sound of her voice and to find out the name of my mate.

My forever wasn't over after all, it was only just starting.
