"So, it seems you've discovered that today is no ordinary day. Today is a day to find the extent of your abilities. Your objective is to find your way out of the maze. There are obstacles," boomed the speaker next to the camera. "You will be stuck in this maze until you find your way out. You're in a different section of the building, now. You need to escape this floor. Remember, you aren't ordinary. Good luck." I looked at Jace and then Adri. Jace walked toward the camera and hit it, smashing it and making the scientists blind in this hallway.
"We're getting into some pretty deep trouble here," Adri said.
"What more trouble could we get into? We've already been kidnapped, taken from our homes and families." My voice cracked on the word 'families'. It's true; I miss my family with all my heart. I miss my mom, my dad, even my crazy little brother, Joe. My mom probably already had the baby that she'd announced she was pregnant with three weeks before I was taken. In fact I was sure she'd had the baby, and it was growing up without me, but I couldn't bring myself to believe it. They were such a huge part of my life and I took them for granted.
"Hey. It's okay, we're going to get out of here. We'll pass the tests. I'll get you to your family." Jace said gently. "Don't cry." I hadn't realized I was crying. He wrapped his arms around me and held me tight. I tried to breathe in and out without sobbing. When we finally pulled away from each other, there was a wet, tear stained spot on his shirt. I seriously needed to stop crying in front of him.
"Let's go." I said. We walked for a while, probably somewhere between a half hour and an hour before Jace stopped at a random wall.
"There has to be a trick." He said. He moved his hands all over the wall, looking for a secret door or something to get us out of this place. Finally, he threw his hands behind his head and grunted, throwing them at the wall. Chunks broke off and a crack trailed through it. It seemed to be drywall or something cheap like that. He reared back his fist and broke through the last layer of the wall in one section. He kicked at the edges to make it bigger.
Adri and I walked closer and tried to pull out some of the drywall pieces to make the hole bigger. Just as it was getting large enough for us to walk through, a strange electrical noise sounded behind us. Out of nowhere, three men stood behind us with weird, glowing weapons that looked like something out of a science fiction movie. Then again, we must look like science fiction characters too. Jace wasted no time in running towards them and knocking two of them together, throwing them unconscious.
Obviously, he was prepared to finish up and get out of here. The last man aimed his gun at Jace, though, and readied it, creating that strange, shrieking, electrical noise again. Jace ran at him but he shot and Jace was left on the floor. His whole body was racked with seizure-like movements as tiny, blue electric lightning bolts ran across his skin. The scene was scary and mysterious to me as I stared at him, wondering if this would kill him.
The man aimed his gun at me next, readying it. It made the noise again and he shot. Adri leaped in front of me, getting hit with the electric ball and falling to the floor. She and Jace both looked like they were having a seizure with electrical strings snaking across their skin. I gulped. We wouldn't make it out of here if I didn't do something. I lifted into the air, gently flapping my wings. I waved at the man and smiled a seductive smile, moving airily across the space between us. My head was barely two feet above his but he stared up at me, raking his eyes across my body and landing them on my wings. I realized that I was the only one with visible powers, that they might not know about us.
Before the man could come out of his trance, I pulled back my foot and kicked him hard in the chin. He stumbled back and held his chin before looking up at me with confusion in his eyes.
