It had a been a few years since my last close call with death when I was out with my sister Kathy. She wasn't supposed to be with me. She was supposed to stay home. I was going alone but at the last minute Kathy decided she was going to tag along.
We were crossing the street by our apartment building to call on our friend who lived in the building across the street when we were struck by a car. It all happened so fast.
We were crossing on a green light but it had turned yellow and then red very quickly when we were only halfway across the street. Kathy and I ran when we saw the light was now red. I guess we didn't run fast enough or maybe we ran too fast. Either way we happened to reach a certain point in the street and at the very point in time that a small car hit the gas.
It was a small red compact car. There was a driver and a passenger in that very small car, both of them were men. It hit Kathy first. It hit her pretty hard and very fast. That's when I panicked and began running across the road so that I could get to my sister who was now laying on the other side of the street on the sidewalk unconscious.
The next thing I knew I was in the middle of the road staring down a pair of bright yellow headlights. I was almost sure that the vehicle that those headlights belonged to was going to run me over. It was a black Jeep and it was coming towards me pretty fast. I tried to stand up but I fell right back down. My right leg didn't work. That's when I realized that the same car that had hit Kathy had hit me too and had knocked me unconscious. It had hit me immediately after hitting Kathy.
I couldn't put any weight on my right leg no matter how hard I tried but I had to get to my sister. At that moment all I cared about was getting to Kathy and making sure that she was still alive. My biggest fear right then was that the impact of the hit from the car had killed her. I didn't know what I would do if that was what had happened. She was my big sister and I needed her to be ok, I needed her to be alive. I just couldn't imagine a life without her as much as she annoyed me and teased me. And what would I tell my mom? There was no way I could explain that. She had to be ok. If I was ok and she wasn't I knew that I wouldn't be able to live with the guilt that I would feel. I just knew that I had to get to her.
I began crawling across the road dragging my right leg behind me. I didn't bother watching for cars or lights even though the light was green for the cars to drive. I didn't even care if I got hit by another car. I didn't care if I lived or died. All that mattered now was getting to my sisters side so I could help her, so I could make sure that she was alive.
When I did finally get to my sister's side there was a gentleman circling his car and I instantly knew that he must have been the man driving the car that had hit us. He really didn't seem to concerned that he had just hit two young children with his car. He seemed more concerned as to whether or not there had been any damage done to his car.
Kathy's jacket was over her head and she was curled up into a ball. The man tried to move her and I immediately stopped him calling him all sorts of names. I called him so many names that I don't even remember half of the names that I had called him.
I had recently taken first aid training at school and knew that moving my sister was a bad idea in case her spine had been injured in the accident. It made me very angry that a grown man with a driver's license and a car didn't know such simple common sense. Now I was scared for Kathy yet again. I couldn't let him move her. I didn't let him move her. I just sat right beside her and did my best to protect her from any more harm.
When Kathy finally awoke she had no recollection of what had just happened or how she wound up curled up into a ball on the sidewalk. She had no idea that we had just been hit by a car. I was actually kind of jealous because I remembered everything about the horrifying event that had just occurred.
