BEEP BEEP BEEP

The sound of my alarm went on and on, but I didn't want to get out of bed, so I just threw it hard on my wooden floor and I guess I broke it because the beeping finally stops.

"Em, this is the fourth one you've broken," Tiffany groaned.

"Tiff, you know how much I hate waking up." I mumbled.

"Come on birthday girl, let's do something today!"

"Tiffany, you know how I don't like to celebrate my birthday. Besides, what's so great about them? We just grow older. Big Whoop."

"I know you don't, but we can go to the park if you'd like," she suggested

"I'd rather stay in bed all day."

"I know you do, I think you'd choose your bed over me." Tiffany joked

"You know me too well." I chuckled, getting out of bed.

"I got your favorite Starbucks drink and a cupcake." Tiffany pointed at the hot, delicious drink.

"Caramel macchiato?"

"Well of course, and Happy 17th Birthday Em!" She hands me the red velvet cupcake, with the number 17 frosted on top.

"Thanks Tiff." I hugged her, and then start drinking my cup of joy.

Tiffany and I have been best friends ever since we were in diapers. Her mom and mine actually went to college together and have remained friends ever since. Tiffany's mom, Anne, would tell me stories about the two of them when they were young, which I was always happy to hear. So anyway, Tiffany knows everything about me, and by everything I mean no secrets at all.

Later that day, we went to the park and had a small picnic, which contained of nothing but junk food. After that, we both visited mom's grave and each of us put a flower on it. Tiffany waited for me in her car while I talked to mom for a bit. I basically talked about everything, just like I do every time I come here. Now we're back home, watching some random old movie.

DING DONG! DING DONG!

"Yay! Pizza's finally here!" She jumped off the couch and raced to the door. That girl and her pizza...

"EMMA, ITS FOR YOU!" She shouted from the door.

"Delivery for Ms. Emma Greyson," The middle-aged man said, handing me a box. "Just sign here please." So I did and thanked him.

It's a small blue present box with a silver ribbon on top of it, and on top of the box says 'Happy Birthday!' written with a black sharpie.

"Oh my god Emma! Do you think it might be from Hayd-"

"Don't even mention his name." I said harshly and then completely regretted it.

"Tiff," I sighed. "I'm sorry you know I didn't mean that, it's just I don't like talking about him." I apologized to her.

"Emma it's totally fine, I shouldn't have mentioned him." She gave me a side hug.

"Okay, let's see what's in here." I cutthe ribbon on top and open the box, and find a letter and a silver ring with the letter L engraved on the inside. The letter read:

Dear Lovely Emma,

Happy Birthday to my dearest niece, I hope you're doing fine. I hope you like your gift, I'm sorry I couldn't call but you know how expensive the call is from Canada to America and we usually spent hours on the phone! The ring actually belonged to your mother, it was one of her favorite rings and she gave it to me before she got married. I think you should have it because it was very valuable to her and I trust you with it.

Love,

your Auntie Lisa

Aunt Lisa is my mom's older and only sister. Every now and then she'd give a call or text me so we would always be in touch.

Reading this letter made me tear up, Aunt Lisa is probably the only close family I have left, and that's sad considering we barely talked. I mean sure, I had cousins from my dad's side but we're not even one bit to close.

"Are those happy or sad tears?"

"Happy tears." I gave her a small smile and slip the ring on my middle finger.

**

"Emma, I don't want to ruin the mood or anything, but where the hell is Eric?"

"It's Saturday, he's probably drinking or some shit." I shrugged.

Eric is actually my father, but Tiffany and I call him by his first name because he doesn't deserve to be called a father after what he has done to Hayden and me.

** The ring in the picture is the one Aunt Lisa gave to Emma but has an L engraved on the top.
