Allow me to ask you a question;
What does freedom mean to you?

To me, freedom is releasing all of the tension from your shoulders. Feeling like no one in the world, not one person, could ever grab a hold of you. Like an eagle; soaring above all the things that don't matter, feeling the crisp wind as it lifts you up from all of your problems.
Coincidentally, I spot a peregrine falcon flying above the rows of trees as I'm driving along the coast. It hovers for a few more moments, then suddenly dives straight into the forest.
What a free, little bird.
Doesn't need anyone or anything to tell it what to do, other than itself.

My point is that I've just graduated from high school, and I've never felt more free in my life. To productively use this gift of leisure, I've decided to hang out at my friend's apartment before I start my prep weeks for university. You heard me right - I'm going to university, straight after the end of Year 12. Ironic, isn't it, considering the fact that I've just been talking about how free I feel right now... Let's say that my future goes before my choice of pleasure-spending.

In a matter of time I parked my car in the streets of Sydney and I'm walking a few blocks to my friend's apartment. The city is always packed so it's hard to find a spot close to where you'd prefer to be. I enter through the lobby doors and step into the elevator. My fingers float over the buttons and I realise... I've never been to my friend's apartment before... Awkwardly, I pull out my phone and desperately send a message as I feel the elevator doors close and the room shift upwards. This is going to take a while...

After what felt like an infinity, I finally arrive to the floor where I am to find a certain room door. 216, 217, 218- ahah! I knock briefly on the polished door of room 219 and in an instant the door swings open to reveal my friend's bright face.
"Hey James! Haven't seen you in ages, man."
"Technically, it has only been a week but I'll let that slip by."
Christopher and I chuckle. I walk into the hallway and find Matt, Eliza, and Kerrie sitting on the lounge by the TV. They greet me and I suit myself to some fruit laid on the coffee table.
"Who's up for some Dungeons and Dragons?" Everyone buzzed with excitement as the game started.
While we're playing Matt asks me, "So, James, you thinking of moving into a flat or something?" I think for a moment. "Yeah", I reply, "I could stay in the beach house but it's a long drive to my uni."
"You can move in here, if you like," Christopher offered. I declined, knowing that he would never leave me in peace to do my studying for a solid 5 minutes.
We played a few more rounds, watched a few movies, then the clock struck 9:00pm. "I should probably head home now, I need to start packing to move in to my new apartment-" I get cut off by Chris exclaiming, "You're moving into an apartment already? Why didn't you tell us?!" Oh, Christoper Harris.

The evening summer breeze lightly beats against my shirt as I walk along side the amber city lights. Walking along the path, I notice the building of the apartment that I'm going to move into in a few days. I stand directly in front of the building, gazing at the lights emitting from the windows with translucent curtains. A few moments later I approach my car until I hear a faint grunt in a dark alley a few metres away. The hand that was going to reach for my car keys places itself back to my side. With caution, I step closer to the alley and squint my eyes through the pitch black surroundings. Out of the silhouettes I could only make out a man falling to the ground, and a woman slouched over with an aggressive gesture. I didn't want to get any closer, but my curiosity had the best of me. I lean forward, my upper body entering the cold darkness...-

"Hey!"

She's talking to me. She is talking to me- She spotted me ... and she's holding a knife!

Before any other disastrous things could happen, I turn around and speed-walk towards my car. I fumble out the keys, glancing over my shoulder to make sure that woman didn't come for me. I finally unlocked the car and swooped into the front seat. My car ignites with a splutter and a roar, and I swerve out of the parking lane onto the main road.

As I'm on the motorway, I can't help but comprehend what I've just witnessed. Should've I called the police? Would've it been better to ignore the sounds in the first place? The only things I should focus on is moving into my new apartment, and preparing my things for university.

It's going to be a big year.
