Prologue

Nate Beaumont looked away from the doctor before him, eyes settling onto the ticking wall clock. It was a kind of nuisance to him for it aided in building the palpable tension in the small office.

"What if I say I won't die? How can you know when I'll die? What if I refuse to die, then what?" He dared to ask with a touch of defiance.

His blue eyes were aflame as he snapped his head back in the direction of the middle aged man seated before him.

The moment he had walked in through those doors with a face like a brick, Nate knew he didn't like him. His movements were all sharp and with purpose.

He analyzed the chart for a few seconds and looked up with a perfunctory smile flashed for just a moment. Behind the gun-metal spectacles his eyes were as grey as washed-out bed sheets and the lines around his mouth gave no indication that he ever lost himself in laughter.

Dr. Hudson's shoulders were squared as he leant forward, hands clasped, to address the young man.

"I'm sorry. Nothing can be done by either of us in this situation."

The boy never understood why salubrious people always apologized to the sick.

He screwed his eyes shut as if he was experiencing intense pain before reopening them, the fire within them dimming.

Nate was terrified.

Of course he was.

His life seemed to have finally gotten back on track recently.

With the rekindling of his parents' divorce-threatened relationship, he was genuinely happy. They even got him a new car as an additional gift along with the good news.

Then this came along.

A proper slap in the face that he didn't deserve the good in life.

It was like every time he felt as if things were okay something else popped up and proved him otherwise.

He was far from ready to accept this ill fate of his. Hell, he was turning nineteen in a couple of weeks. How was it fair for something like this to happen to him when he hasn't even been through all that the world had to offer?

It doesn't matter though, he decided reluctantly.

Nothing could change the path he was destined to walk on even if the author of his life was cruel and unjust.

With a deep breath, he adjusted the formal tie around his neck having felt suffocated. He looked straight ahead, conjuring up the bravest smile he could and asked,

"How much time do I have left?"
