me, standing on a chair with a megaphone: keep your personal opinions separate from your fanfiction !!!!
i'm going to give the easiest example possible, because a lot of people really seem to hate clarke.
i'm going to curve from the topic a bit, but i promise i has to do with the point of this chapter. clarke is, in canon, the head. she is an 18-year-old girl who's been tasked with the responsibility of saving the world. the delinquents frequently blame her for basically everything, no matter what she does. all of the characters are morally grey. THERE ARE NO GOOD GUYS. clarke isn't always going to make the most moral decisions, but she is, in the end, trying to do what's best for her people. i'm not saying you have to like clarke. but just keep this in mind.
the reason i went on that tangent is because i've noticed that people write her out to be this total bitch. and i mean that she'll say things completely out of character and have a feud with the OC for basically no reason.
if you know that your character disagrees with some things that a canon character does or says, then by all means, that's fine. for example, my OC, fallon, is relatively civil with finn until he starts being a fuckboi and does things she disagrees with. same with octavia. i haven't liked her since 2x12, but faltavia was a huge brotp until 3x10.
all of this is about perspective (i'm going to mention this a lot throughout this book, so bear with me). nobody gets along with everybody. this is why it's important to know your character so you know what they stand for. if they are an advocate for peace, they might disagree with season 2 finn. if they tend to see the darker side of things, maybe they'll join team pike in season 3. i try to point out to my readers that sometimes my characters (in any fandom) can be unreliable narrators in the sense that they see what they want to see.
i know it's difficult to write nicely about a character you just can't stand, but please keep your personal opinions out of your stories or else it ends up looking like this:
"hi, my name is sapphire and i loved bellamy blake from the moment i laid eyes on him <3 <3 but there's something off about that clarke chick. i just HATE her and i don't know why :/ everything she does is sooOoOo annoying omg!! also charlotte has a murdery vibe about her :/ i just don't trust that 12 year old. she's probably going to kill someone!!!"
it's the same about positive feelings toward the characters as well. murphy was written as an antagonist until season 2 and yet some people write things like:
clarke: we banish him sapphire: excUSE ME, B I T C H 🙅🏼♀️🙅🏼♀️ *throwing rocks* MURPHY IS *yanking up handfuls of grass* THE TRASH 🗑🗑 KING 🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻 *picks up clarke* AND HE DESERVES NOTHING BUT THE BEST 😤😤 THAT'S FACT *throws clarke off of the cliff*
