(Did you know that cannonly, Near was still very much so a child and looked to the SPK members for emotional support for his deductions bc at the end of the day he needed adult approval. He was a early teenager when he was flying over to Japan and my poor boy was anxious and was very codependent on the adults to look after him.)
(Anyways I head cannon that the SPK members helped Near with social skills)
(Also, ya'll see the sign there besties, 🍋 fasten your seatbelts everyone)
"Nervous?"
Halle asked as she led me through the halls of the building that Near and the SPK had been staying in since he was assigned to the Kira case. Years had passed since the case was solved, but Near remained in Japan afterwards. It had been a couple of years since I had last seen him, back when we were 13, was the last time I had seen his face, and now? Now it would mark the 5th year since we had last seen each other, last touched each other, and 5 years since we had spoken to one another. Well, more me speaking than him, but it was still interaction."Slightly,"
I replied, giving her a meek smile as I scratched my cheek with a finger.
"It's been five years, we're both of adult age. Of course I'm nervous."
I laughed slightly to myself, trying to calm myself more than anything else, and brushing off my anxieties as a joke whilst we entered the elevator.Thoughts collided in my head as I remembered the type of person Near used to be, all the way back when we were kids growing up in the orphanage together. Quiet, reserved, critical, terrible at physical activity. I snickered to myself.
"Has he become social over the years?"
I asked the blonde woman next to me, and she stifled a giggle behind her hand."Surprisingly yes,"
Halle responded, and I felt my eye twitch slightly in pleasant surprise at the answer.
"Working alongside Near for so long really showed how he was just a kid inside the whole time. He used to be very codependent on us for things, especially when he was spouting his deductions.""No surprise there,"
I commented,
"he came here at 13, escorted by strangers he was going to work with for a while. He needed adult support."
I smiled at the thought of Near being more social.
"I'm glad to hear he's coming out of his shell though, I never would have guessed that the quiet and cold Nate River would now be more outspoken."Halle took the lead once the elevator came to a stop at the twentieth floor of the building.
"It's a shame you both weren't allowed to keep in contact for safety reasons. He doesn't shut up about you when the opportunity rises to mention your name."
I felt my face heat up.
"Oh- he does?""Yes. It's always, Y/n this and Y/n that and Y/n would be so good at asking questions and finding answers and Y/n would easily be able to become an undercover agent with her way of words."
Halle continued on, for what felt like forever, blatantly ignoring my pleas for her to stop, and groaning as she poked some fun at me. Eventually we stopped in front of a relatively normal looking door, and Halle placed her hand onto the handle of the door, giving me a sly grin."Have fun catching up, this is his private play room, we're not really allowed in here."
Before I could have the chance to question anything, she swung the door open and pushed me inside, shutting it firmly behind me, letting me stare at the door for a while until I let out the breath i was holding and turned around, taking in the atmosphere. Hundreds, hell, thousands of cards were floating around in the air as though it were snowing, and in the middle of the room was a familiar, white clad figure, only this time, he was a lot taller than before.
