CHERE MAMAN
Dedicated to Val
Although mum was . . .
NOT an angel,
NOT like Gabriel,
She did
all she could
for us.
She was good,
No fuss.
She often raised
Her tired voice
But that was
Our choice.
(We needed it.)
She gave us the strap
Not just a tap.
(We needed that slap.)
But she also praised
When we earned high grades.
Good guidance she gave.
She set a fine example.
She was a good role model.
Although she was frugal
Our food and clothes
Were always ample.
She used every sample
And there was no waste.
She did have good taste.
She nurtured,
protected,
toiled for
our family
like a worker bee.
She made sure
We had fun,
Taught us to swim
In hot, Aussie sun
To make castles
In the sand
Followed by a run
Along the beach
Or the nearby land
Where we would,
When e'er we could,
Watch the whales breach.
We learned from her
To surf, dive, dance
Golf for par,
To ride a bike,
To drive a car,
To play tennis.
('Twas there I met Dennis).
She was so unselfish
To us three,
Doug, Lynne and me.
Her clothes were not lavish.
The few jewels she owned
She truly did cherish.
