Lewis

What a day. Nate sighed again. Lewis felt pity for him; he had just lost his mother and his brother and got left with a bastard of a father to look after him. Luckily he could be out of the house in the next year. The news of his own mother had once again brushed over him with a cold sweep, leaving him feeling sick and bare. Nate walked over to his bed and plonked down on it. The springs in the bed squeaked. Lewis could hear Markus stomping down the stairs.

“I’m going out; dinner is whatever you make yourself. Don’t wait up for me.”

“Don’t wait up for me.” Nate completed Markus’ sentence as his voice faded and the front door slammed. He hung his head and then looked up at Lewis with an unrecognisable emotion on his face.

“Same thing every night. Don’t expect him to be home before two tomorrow morning.” Nate said gloomily.

“Sorry Nate.” Lewis said, walking over to him and patting his shoulder. “How about we get some pizza? On me.”

Lewis smiled and wiggled his eyebrows at Nate. Nate chuckled and nodded.

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Ahhh, that was great.” Nate sighed after stuffing his fourth slice in his mouth. Lewis nodded in agreement.

“Nate can we do something later?” Lewis asked. Nate frowned and then his frown softened into a small smile.

“Sure, what ya got in mind?”

“Can we go to the hospital, my mom apparently left a note there for me.” Once again the frown returned to Nate’s face.

“Yeah, yeah I suppose we can.” Lewis grinned at Nate, trying to not show how upset he really was.

He wouldn’t be able to go by himself just in case he broke down again. Nate was amazing at making you feel better, it was like he could sense when something was wrong and he was always the one who could cheer you up again. Lewis sighed, relieved.

Nate handed Lewis a helmet and hopped onto his bike.

“Ahh, can’t we go in my car?” Lewis said, trying to get out of having to sit behind Nate and holding onto his waist. He shuddered at how that would look to anyone who knew them. Last thing he wanted was to seem gay or bisexual.

He had nothing against homosexuals; it’s just that he preferred sticking to the opposite sex.

“Why? Got a problem with holding me eh Lou?”

“N- No.” Lewis lied. He had never been a convincing liar anyway.

“Well then Peter Parker why don’t you get us there with your amazing Spiderman skills?” Nate said sarcastically. “Besides, your car is back at your house.”

Nate folded his arms across his chest in anticipation for Lewis’ answer.

“UGH Fine.” He sighed loudly, giving in and pulling himself onto the bike.

“Hold on tight Mary-Jane.” Lewis thwacked Nate’s helmet as he whizzed off down the road, laughing at his so called joke.

The hospital ward was freezing and washed-out. Lewis could feel his heart thumping in his chest. It thumped so loudly he was almost sure Nate would hear it. What was written in that letter?

What would he do with the information inside of it?

Millions of thoughts raced through his mind as he practically fell over his own two feet, turning the corner to the reception desk.

“Lewis?” One of the nurses recognised him and smiled at him. Her eyes were filled with worry and sympathy. “Did you come for the note, Honey?”

Nate nodded at her and smiled softly. The nursed smiled back at him, revealing her perfect teeth. Nate seemed to have this way with woman, one smile and they are weak at the knees, stumbling and tripping over each other’s jaws that hang on the floor.

Lewis smiled and shook his head at Nate.

“What?” Nate asked Lewis, noticing him staring at him in amusement. Lewis lifted his eyebrows and then shrugged.

“Oh nothing.” He said, winking as the nurse waltzed back into the reception area and stood right next to Nate.

“Here’s the note.” She said waving it at Lewis, without taking her gaze off of Nate.

Nate frowned and looked at Lewis, giving him a questioning look. Lewis took the note from her firm grip and mumbled a thank you, grabbing Nate’s jacket as he brushed past the nurse. Nate fell into stride with Lewis. Lewis glanced back at a seemingly breathless and flustered nurse. Lewis raised his eyebrows and chuckled to himself.

“What are you laughing about?” Nate queried.

“Did you see her face? She was head over heels.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Lou.” Lewis stared at Nate in shock, how did he not notice her swooning over him, just minutes ago.

“I’m serious.” Lewis laughed, stuffing the note into his jeans pocket.

“Well, She’s not my type.” Nate said sarcastically.
