Before you start developing your story; before your fingertips dance across the keyboard to create, first tell yourself that YOU ARE A MUTHAFUCKIN WRITER. Whether you are still new to this form of expression, or you are a seasoned author who has several works beneath their belt, declare out into the universe that you are a damn writer and no one can take that away from you.
If writing; if crafting stories is your true passion, then by all means do it. Don't let anyone stop you. Don't let any rude comments, or even constructive criticism pause your endeavors towards any goals you are trying to pursue.

Whatever you do, don't discredit yourself as an author BECAUSE you write fanfiction. In my opinion, which might be disregarded and unpopular to others, is that fanfics can be classified as a "real" story. I put the word real in quotations because what defines a REAL story?
According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word story is defined as, "an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment."
Which means a fanfiction is in fact, a story. If you write fanfics, don't feel like you're less of an author because that is what you have chosen to do.
