Chapter 2: First Things First

Start from the beginning

Arriving at Dr. Anneise's office, we were called back immediately. After going through the preliminary blood work, urine test, and vitals check, we sat down in the room to wait on the doctor. El was on her phone trying to avoid me at all cost. I just needed to hear her voice whether she yelled at me or not. I missed her rants and playful banter. Just as I was about to speak Dr. Anneise walked in.

" Hello my favorite couple, it seems our family is growing." El gave her a small smile with a head nod. " So how are you feeling mama, any pain or discomfort?" Dr. Anneise asked.

" I have had some spotting here and there with a little pressure, but I read online that it was normal," El replied cautiously. I shot a confused look at Elise; she never mentioned any of those things to me. My mind then began to wander to all the stress our conversation put on her body. Here I was pushing an issue not even paying attention to what kind of toll it was taking on her.

" Have you been under any stress lately?" Dr. Anneise asked.

I immediately spoke up, " Yea, she has, but I'm going to work on helping her decrease that." Dr. Anneise nodded and sent a smile my way as she continued to examine Elise. She had her legs resting in the stirrups as she inserted her fingers into her while pushing down on her stomach.

" Your cervix is nice and high which is a good thing. Although a little spotting is normal in some cases, I would still like to check your blood work and do an ultrasound just to be on the safe side. We normally don't do them this early, but I want to be thorough". Elise nodded her head while the nurse handed the doctor her chart. Dr. Anneise looked at it briefly before turning back to us to speak. " Well, it seems your progesterone is low, we will give you a supplement for that. Progesterone is what helps build your uterine lining to be sure that you can hold your baby. These will be vaginal injectables so no sex for the next five days. You will have to go to the specialty pharmacy so that they can compact them for you".

My head immediately started spinning, and from the look on El's face, I knew she was going through it as well. This was a lot to take in such a short amount of time. I just prayed that everything else turned out good because I don't think I can take any more bad news. Then the medicine she needed couldn't even be purchased at a regular pharmacy so that lets you know this was serious.

Dr. Anneise rubbed her back and told her we would figure it out and not to stress. Although El nodded her head, I could see the hurt and confusion in her eyes. She just stared blankly out the window past my head. I wondered what she was thinking, but Elise was the type to hold it in until she burst. I was pulled out of my thoughts by the nurse coming to take us to the ultrasound room.

The ultrasound tech came in and gave Elise a gown to change into. She informed us that since it was so early on in the pregnancy, she would have to do a vaginal ultrasound. When the ultrasound tech returned, she began to move around preparing the equipment. She took what looked like a latex condom and placed it over the ultrasound wand and added some jelly to it before inserting it into El. I took the opportunity grab El's hand. She cut her eyes at me and then ran her thumb across the back of my hand. I guess we both needed assurance and comfort at that moment.
