"I DON'T KNOW about this, Mom," Cameron sighed as she placed the strap of her duffle bag on her shoulder. It wasn't as heavy as one would think, she didn't have many items that were worth owning. Just clothes, a toothbrush/toothpaste, a hairbrush, one pair of low top Converse shoes, and other hygiene items. "What if he turns out to be, I don't know, a murderer?"

"Trust me, Cam, Jasper is not a murderer," her mother chuckled, "he wouldn't hurt a fly."

"Are you sure? You never really know someone."

"Alright, stop it. Stop trying to get out of this," her mother laughed again while adding unnecessary things to Cameron's duffle bag, "Jasper is a wonderful person and so are you. You're going to get along just fine."

At the moment, Cameron was preparing to move from Raleigh, North Carolina to Richlands, North Carolina to live with her father, Jasper Newton for the school year. When her mother, Stella, and he were teenagers, they had a one night stand. After discovering she was pregnant, she didn't tell him but instead moved away to hide the secret. Her family had been ashamed of having a pregnant teenager but didn't want her to have an abortion. So now, seventeen years later, she managed to find Jasper and tell him the truth.

Cameron and Jasper met only two months ago but still were awkward around each other. They hung out every weekend during summer break which wasn't many times since Cameron worked often. The three of them decided it would be best for her to get to know her father before going off to college by living with him for her last year of high school.

If there was one thing she enjoyed, though, was change. It didn't matter what it was, she loved it. Being able to start with a clean slate was comforting, an opportunity to not be ashamed of who she was; gay.

Back in junior high, she discovered an attraction to girls, mainly on her best friend; Whitney. She was pretty much the typical first girl crush. Sparkling blue eyes, silky and blonde hair, dimples so deep you could sit in them, and just the cutest smile. The problem was, not only was she straight but also a homophobe.

Just before summer break began, Cameron decided to tell Whitney the truth. This was a few days after meeting her father and planning on staying with him for the rest of her high school career so if it ended badly, she would never have to face Whitney again. Thank God she waited till then to confess.

She had been helping Whitney pack for a trip her family was going on. Originally, she was invited but after the conversation, she no longer was. "You're...gay? Were you only friends with me because you thought you could get with me?! What the hell is wrong with you?! You are disgusting. I regret ever meeting you, you dyke."

Every single day Cameron replayed those words in her head, praying that they never left her best friend's mouth. She remembered being chased out of Whitney's house by her mother. They all thought she was going to assault her but that wasn't the truth. The crush on Whitney was only temporary but now she wished it never happened.
