Nick raised his eyebrow and laughed a bit. "Yeah, try telling her that. She's super depressed because she doesn't have a date to the Prom and thinks she's not good enough for a decent guy."
I frowned a little, almost upset that this lovely girl would think herself unworthy. "I don't know what the standards are for beauty in this time...but she would have had her choice of suitors in my day."
~~~Nick's POV~~~
Why had I not thought about this before? I mean, the Prom was being held at one of the reception areas right here in the Museum...it's perfect!
"Hey Ahk...how would you like to be (Y/n)'s date for the Prom?"
I was pretty sure his face was as bright as the tablet he guarded. "Nick, I would be greatly honored to escort such a lovely young lady."
And that was when I started working on my plan.
~~~The Next Day, Your POV~~~
Nick just about tossed his lunch tray on the table before sitting down. He looked excited. The kind of excited you look when you're about to cause trouble. "Ok, Cuz, what's up?"
He grabbed a bite of his cheeseburger before giving me a cheesy grin. "Still no date for Prom, right?"
I gave him a sour look. "Gee, thanks for rubbing that one in." I stuffed several ketchup-laden fries into my mouth. "And no...still no date."
Nick gave me that same silly grin. "Get a dress, (Y/n). Just let me see it when you do."
I looked at him quizzically. "Nicky...what the hell are you up to?"
He smiled. "You'll see...just trust me, please?"
Downing the last of my bottled water, I stood up with my tray. "Fine, Nick...I'll trust you. But if this blows up in my face, I'm telling Andrea about the time you threw up on the Ferris Wheel at Coney Island." His face turned pale.
"Promise."
~~~Prom Night, Ahk's POV~~~
I let Larry fix the tie he'd fastened around my neck. Modern clothing is so...constrictive. But Nick had planned this for (Y/n), so I was happy to go along with it. "Why do I feel so...anxious, Larry?"
The night guard gave a chuckle. "Well, many teens feel anxious about Prom. Nick was a mess waiting for the opportunity to ask Andrea, and they actually knew each other first. But my niece is one of the best people you could know. She's smart, funny..."
"Beautiful." I couldn't help my response.
"Yeah, well, I'm biased so there's that. But I will say this, Ahk. You hurt my niece...you'll be spending a lot more time in that coffin." I nodded in compliance before Larry straightened the collar of my shirt and helped me into my jacket. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you were just another teenager taking (Y/n) to the Prom. Have fun, kid...just not too much." He handed me a small box with a flower on a wristband. "That's for her. A corsage. Nick will explain it." I nodded slightly.
I smiled at him as I saw Nick coming up to us. "Hey, Ahk. Man you look great! Andrea and (Y/n) are waiting in the lobby, you ready?"
I tugged at the tie anxiously, but nodded again. "You look nice also, Nick. Let's do this...Prom thing."
~~~Your POV~~~
I was standing in the lobby with Andrea, Nick's date, while Nick ran to see his dad for a moment. I loved this museum. I'd never been here at night, though. I'd never believed him when he told me the museum "came to life" at night. But here I was, staring at a T-Rex skeleton panting like a puppy while Teddy Roosevelt was playing usher for the teens and chaperones to the planetarium for the dance. I looked around and saw Nick walking toward us with someone.
My heart stopped. Damn...he was gorgeous. Olive skin, and stunning hazel eyes. And his tie was (F/c), same as my dress.
"Sorry, guys, didn't mean to make you wait." Nick pulled me out of my daze and laughed. "Um, (Y/n), I'd like you to meet Ahkmenrah. He's your date."
"Wha...what?!?" I was practically stunned into silence. This...this was my date? I pulled Nick to the side and pinched his ear. "You're messing with me, right? How much did you pay this dude?"
Nick looked at me, offended. "I would not pay a guy to go out with my cousin. He saw your pic in my phone and asked about you...so I decided to set you up."
I wasn't sure if I should have been mad or grateful. "Ok, Nick...I'm gonna buy this for now." I walked back over to Andrea and Ahkmenrah and smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Ahkmenrah."
He took my hand gently and kissed it, without breaking eye contact. "Honestly, the honor is mine, lovely lady. Just call me Ahk, though." I couldn't breathe. He held out his arm for me to take and I hesitantly did. Nick and Andrea led the way to the planetarium for the dance.
The night was amazing. The four of us ate, talked, and danced. I was convinced I'd passed out in class and this was some strange dream. I finally got the nerve to ask Ahk the question that had been burning in my mind. "How do you know Nick?" Nick's face almost paled. Then I realized where I was. I'd been in this museum enough times to recognize that...name... "Oh my god..."
THAT AHKMENRAH?!?!?!
I took a step back. "You're saying...you're a some-thousand-year-old mummy?"
Ahk looked at me shyly. "Yeah."
I stepped outside to get air. An ancient pharaoh...was my prom date...
"(Y/n)." Ahk stepped behind me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry...I just needed a moment to process this." I turned to look at him. "I just...couldn't understand why a freaking gorgeous pharaoh would be remotely interested in a girl like me."
He took my hand in his and held it. "I don't know what anyone else is thinking...but I think you're beautiful. It's been an absolute honor to be your date this evening."
I felt the rush of warmth on my face as he ran his thumb along my cheek. His hazel eyes met my (E/c) ones and he leaned in close. As if by instinct, I leaned up to meet his kiss. His lips were soft and warm. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his free hand around my waist, softly caressing my cheek as he tilted his face to better access my mouth. I slowly parted my lips, allowing him to slip his tongue in slowly. We shared that soft kiss for what felt like ages before he pulled away, smiling.
"Wow," was all I could manage.
"Likewise, (Y/n). Now, would you like to go back inside and dance with me?"
"I'd be honored, Your Highness." I winked and took his arm again to return to the dance.
Best. Prom. EVER.
Oh, yeah, and Ahk asked me on a regular date. We're going to have a picnic in the planetarium next week. And I definitely owe my cousin a world of thanks.
