It was a Saturday afternoon when I was ten. My dad was actually off work for once so we decided to have a fun evening outside. My mom seemed very happy about Dad being home. They actually looked like a happy couple. I had invited Thomas over to the house. We had known each other for so long that Linda just let him come over alone. We were just swimming in the water. The water level was too my shoulders and it only went to Thomas's forearm since he had a growth spurt. I don't remember what we were talking about. Probably some dumb inside joke. My mom was sitting with my dad. But then my mom stood up. "I'm going to get a book to read. Watch over (Name)," Mom kissed my dad on the cheek. He nodded and watched her walk inside the house. My dad watched Thomas and me until his phone started to ring. He glanced at it and realized it was his boss. He considered just hanging it up but then picked up the phone. He got up and turned around while he talked to his boss. Thomas grabbed my hand. "We should swim out farther!" He suggested. I shook my head and pointed at my dad. "I'm not allowed to go any farther. That's what my mom says," I replied. Thomas sighed and then rolled his eyes. He then pointed to himself. "Look at me! My shoulders are burning because they're above water. I've got to swim out," he was right. His shoulders were turning a bright pink. But that was mainly his fault. He never wore sunscreen. I glanced at my dad who was still on the phone. Then I looked at Thomas. He had a huge smile on his face and was pulling my hand a little. I took a deep breath and nodded. "Fine, let's go before my dad sees," I mumbled. Thomas cheered and then pulled me out into the water. Eventually, I was in water that was a little too high. I couldn't touch the bottom of the ocean anymore and I was struggling with keeping my head above the water. Thomas was chuckling for no reason while he continued to pull me farther out into the ocean. "Thomas! I-" I yelled before my head went under the water. I could feel the water filling my lungs immediately. I tried to swim back up but I wasn't that good of a swimmer. I tried to yell out even though I was underwater. I moved my arms and legs around as fast as I could in an attempt to get back up to the air. But nothing was working. I eventually started to lose consciousness. I continued to fall deep into the water. Until something grabbed my hand. I was suddenly pulled back up from the water. Thomas held onto to me and swam me back to shore. I still had water in my lungs and couldn't breathe. "Mr. (Last Name)! She's dying!" Thomas yelled at my dad. Dad turned around and saw me. He dropped his phone in the sand and ran over to me. He performed CPR and I could finally breathe again. I sat up quickly and coughed up the water. "Are you okay?" Thomas looked terrified. I nodded. My dad hugged me and then my mom ran out of the house. "What the fuck is going on?" she ran up to us. "Um... (Name) almost drowned," my dad said quietly. My mom pulled me away from him and hugged me. "I can't believe it! I tell you to watch her for five minutes and she almost dies!" she was furious. "Let's go inside," she said to me. She took my hand and pulled me inside the house. That was the day that Thomas saved my life and also ruined it.

After that day, my mom had decided to leave my dad. They got a divorce in less than a month and she packed all of our stuff in a week. It was the last night I was going to be at my dad's house. I sent Thomas a quick message to come over to my house. After a few minutes, there was a knock on my bedroom window. I turned around and saw Thomas standing there. I pushed open my window and he crawled into my room. We sat together on my bed in an awkward silence for a while. "Thank you for... Um, getting me out of the water," I spoke up. Thomas nodded and scratched his neck. "It's no big deal," he shrugged. I gave him a hug. "This is my last day here! I won't see you again," I felt my eyes water up. Thomas patted my back. I sat back and rubbed my eyes a little. "Hey, we will see each other! I promise," he smiled at me. I frowned and looked down. "Okay, look... I'll give you something for you to remember me and my promise," he put a hand on my knee. I glanced up at him. "What?" I asked. Thomas looked around the room and in his pockets but he didn't have anything. He glanced out the window and then stood up. He crawled back out the window and came back in after a minute. He grabbed my hand and put a tiny shell in it. "This shell will represent my promise to see you again. It will always remind you of me," he smirked at me. I laughed a little and held onto the shell. "I'll never forget you," I hugged him again. That was the last time I saw him. Mom and I moved out the next day to a new state. I had to start seeing a therapist when we moved. I was given some antidepressants and my therapist realized that I had suppressed my memories of drowning and of Thomas after two months of being in the new state. I had totally forgotten everything that had happened. It all just turning into a bad dream. I had even forgotten the person who gave me that empty shell.

I jolt up. I realized that I was still in my bedroom. It was all a dream again. I jumped out of the bed and ran out of the room. Thomas was sitting on the couch watching tv again. "Thomas! Oh my god..." I smiled at him. He looked at me confused. "What?" he stood up. I laughed happily and then hugged him. "I remember you! I remember the shell. You saved my life," I held onto him tightly. Thomas pushed me away from him a little to look at my face. We stared at each other for a few seconds. He put his hand on my cheek and then gave me a kiss. We held the kiss for a long time until we both pulled away. "I told you we'd see each other again," Thomas smiled. Thomas kissed me again and I wrapped my arms around his neck. I was in love with Thomas.
