"What-...does this mean?" My voice cracks as I look up from the tattered scroll to the elders before me.

"It means," the head of the elders, my longtime mentor, sits down next to me and gently takes the scroll, "that our traditions have come to an end."

I force my exhausted body to sit up, my head lowered into a bow,"Gomen...Gomen'nasai, Sensei. I've failed everyone."

I feel a hand on my shoulder and look up to see Sensei's old, wise eyes staring at me with a small smile. "You have done nothing wrong. This was destined to happen, (Y/N)-kun. You could not have changed it."

My lips part in surprise, "Surely I could have-"

Sensei holds his hand out to hush me, shaking his head slightly. "There was nothing. However, now there is much to be done. When you are well enough, we will discuss your new role."

I bite my tongue to keep myself from arguing as the elders take their leave.

I look over to see Daiki staring at me with wide, curious eyes (the complete opposite of Sensei's). "(Y/N)-San. What did the scroll say?"

I consider answering for a moment before ultimately lying back down and silently rolling over.

The next few days are a blur. I regained my strength rather quickly, spending most of my time embedded in thoughtful worry for what is to come.

When I am finally released from bed rest, I waste no time rushing off to the library, where the elders reside.

Sensei smiles at me as I enter and I bow cordially. "Ohayō gozaimasu," I greet him.

"Sit", he gestures for me to join him at the kotatsu he is sitting at as he pours two cups of matcha tea.

"Arigato", I thank him as I sit and take the cup in both hands and sip, savoring the warmth of it. It warms the chilling dread deep in my heart.

"(Y/N)-kun," he addresses firmly, getting straight to business,"This village shall always be your home, but it is no longer your place."

My heart drops and I look up at him in horror. "Nani?"

"Do not look so terrified. It is unbecoming if you, Hogo-sha", he criticizes and I look away, ashamed.

"It is just...-how can this no longer be my place if it is my home?"

"You will go to Hanamura, home to the Shimada clan. From there, fate shall guide you", Sensei explains, as if it was the most simple thing to do.

"Fate?" I stare at him incredulously.

"Consider your abilities," Sensei argues,"You were born with them. Do you not think they were given to you with a purpose in mind?"

I nod,"I protect the villa-"

"Do not be so small minded!" He cuts me off, his tone scolding once again. "Your purpose is far greater than to protect our small village."
