My fingers coiled around the steel body of the firearm. The barrel of the gun swiftly brushed on the material of my pants. I hadn't tied my shoelaces as my feet slightly slipped out of my shoes. The birds gliding in the air happily chirping echoed through the bark of the trees surrounding the house.
I dragged my heavy feet over the cement steps that cascaded upwards disappearing from view.
The air inside the building was a drastic change from the clear air outside, slightly suffocating- the foggy air dragging me down as I walked down the stairs pausing on each one to take a deep breath. Moving slow like I was stuck in a vast ocean of waves that kept barreling into me bringing me under making me squirm for oxygen and then popping me right back up- I inhaled deeply, again.
I walked past a plethora of rooms, slowly shifting my weight onto my other foot; I mindless roamed the two story building. I exhaled and stood at the end of the hallway, eyes set dead ahead, I turned around. The gun clincked with my pant zipper reminding me of why I was here. My eyes rummaged the walls, the paint ridden walls, the picture frames that slanted slightly to the right from the sagging building all depicted happy faces.
I stopped on the newest addition frame that was proudly placed on the old wall. My face shone happily in the corner of the photo, my short hair hung over my forehead as I whispered jokes to make Sera laugh. My arm was propped around her shoulders as her head was slightly leaned back. Her features were hazy as she moved too much during the duration of the photo. I hid the gun in the waistband of my pants as my heart murderously drummed against my chest cavity.
I tore my eyes away from the photo and encircled my hand on a steel door knob just opposite of the wall, throwing my leg against the door I pushed it open.
"Well, look who decided to show up!" The words emulating from Jim's mouth cut short when he was interrupted.
"Finally!" Amy's head bobbed as she intook a sip of her water. She leaned backwards falling slightly as she pushed her body on a beanbag chair. Her long legs crossed over one another as she let her head fall back on the plushy material of the chair.
Daisy sat next to Jim, lips pursed as she was engrossed in her cellphone. Her lips smacked loudly as she popped a bubble with her gum.
I stood there in the doorway as I listened to the conversations that ran around the group. I caught Sera's eyes as she beckoned me over to sit by her, I shook my head no.
"Ugh I can't believe Ms. Rossotto gave us a break packet, it's huge!" Ainslee dug into her backpack as she withdrew the monstrosity of a packet.
"Just because she isn't getting any from her wife doesn't mean she can punish us for it" Oliver snarkily remarked as he rolled his eyes. Daisy laughed as her thumb wildly ran across her phone screen.
"How can you people sit there and act normal?!" My voice shook the walls of the home slightly as my outburst caused Amy to jolt. Daisy's eyes wandered over to my face from behind her cellphone, her pink frilly phone case stared back at me.
"What are you talking about?" Jim's curious gaze shifted to my face as his eyebrow raised. Daisy looked back at Jim before going back to her cellphone.
"A girl is dead because of us! How can you sit there and act like nothing ever happened?" I angrily threw back in his face.
"We promised we wouldn't talk about that!" Daisy spoke with a heightened fear that mirrored her expression.
