Lyra's POV
Today is the day of the eclipse.
The battle, in all, went pretty well. Causalities were very low on our side, and the Apollo cabin hardly needed my assistance in healing their patients. The only problem that remained was the gaping hole in the middle of the training arena that probably lead to the eternal pit of Damnation.
I walked by the wilting strawberry fields to the training arena. There, a group of campers - the Hephaestus cabin-- struggled with a piece of large Celestial Bronze. The Hephaestus kids have set up a temporary forge around the hole, so they can continue with their construction of artificial land over the hole. I look at the bridge halfway built, and can't help but admire their craftsmanship. From what I can see, the bridge was made so that it will last for eons, but was still easy to remove, if the time came to use the hole. It was sturdy, yet flexible so that it will adapt to the ragged edges surrounding the hole. On the side of the bridge, intricate design by the Athena cabin, mostly of heroes fighting Greek monsters, shimmer making the bridge suitable for sitting in the middle of the training arena.
" Isn't it amazing?"
I look to my right and find Reagan Clarke, head counselor of the Hephaestus cabin, grinning at the sight of the on-going construction.
" Yes, it is." I admit, glancing sideways at him.
He laughs, but sighs.
" I suppose this amazing piece of workmanship is no match to what your bridges look like in Planet Chaos?" he asks, staring at me hopefully.
" If I were to bring you all to Planet Galax, the Hephaestus cabin can spend their whole lives attempting to figure out how the machinery works, while the Athena cabin will be drooling over the blueprints of our buildings. So technically, this piece of workmanship is no rival to the workmanship on my planet. But it is incredible in Earth rankings." I reply smoothly.
Reagan laughs, looking at me.
" Well, I suppose that's the best we can get out of the Ambassador, mighty and proud." A arrogant voice chides behind me. I turn around to see Daniel Hyde, a son of Ares, smirking with his arm crossed.
" To what do I owe this dishonor?" I ask, raising my eyebrows. My hands shift unconsciously towards my sword hanging at my side, but Daniel catches the movement.
" Scared to face me without a sword, huh? I bet you're so scared that you can't even go to that pit and stand next to it." He says, smirking.
" If you're so big and mighty, why don't you do it?" Reagan retorts, looking at Daniel disdainfully.
" Why, aren't I honored." Daniel says as he walks over to the hole, to the side where the bridge had not been yet constructed, and peers in. Faintly, I see the color drain out of his cheeks, but when he turns to gaze vehemently at us, he is still smirking.
" Well?" he laughs, opening his hands as if to show his existence.
And then everything goes wrong.
As he steps back to show how calm he is, the ridge he is standing on breaks and falls into the pit. The momentum of his own body makes him topple backwards into the pit, and this time the color definitely drains out of his face, making his tanned skin look ghostly and pale.
As quick as lightning I am there, grasping his outstretched hand to pull him backwards. I know what is to come, but I did promise Father that I will guard this camp with my life.
With my life, I did.
I pull Daniel backwards, faintly hearing the screams of the people around the hole, and fall into the hole headfirst. I swirl in mid-air, and see the moment the sun and moon overlap. Sudden darkness falls upon the camp and I fall down into Tartarus, wishing that someday I will see the eclipse on land once more.
