You hear that?
Zayda
"Mrs. Loretta this can't be life right now, I ain't got nowhere else to go! How I'm pose to feed myself, I ain't got no job!"
Zayda angrily balled and unballed her fist out of pure frustration while still seated in her social workers office chair.
"Look, my job here is done, the state doesn't take care of adults," Mrs. Loretta fixed her glasses that hung off of her nose, "Besides you've been given ample time to sort out this situation!" Mrs. Loretta leaned back into her rolling seat with her hands intertwined. This wasn't her life so she could care less about what was happening.
"Sooo 7 days is ample enough time to find a place to stay, get a job and have money to survive on?" Zayda questioned out of frustration as she leaned unto the desk easing closer to the unfazed Mrs. Loretta.
"Like I said before, state funding is only while you are a minor," Mrs. Loretta grabbed the manilla folder that held Zaydas life in it and examined it until she found what she was looking for, " and in 7 days you'll be 18 so you are no longer the states property," She sighed placing the folder back on the desk in its original position.
Rubbing her pants legs, Zayda counted to five to calm her nerves but it wasn't working for her this time, plus she couldn't stand Loretta's lace wig wearing ass.
"Nah, fuck that, I've never been the states property, I don't belong to anyone!" Zayda slammed her fist into the wooden table causing Mrs. Loretta to jump out of fear. The lights in the room even flickered as Zaydas energy grew.
"My hands are tied, there's not much more that I can do!" Mrs. Loretta offered. The tone in her voice had ironically changed octaves as she watched the lights dance through her glasses. Zayda grabbed her last meal vouchers from the desk, and stormed away from her social worker.
"Ughhh this is some bullshit," Zayda walked past Nya, her friend, and pushed through the double doors as she made her exit from the building.
"Slow down with your fast ass,!" Nya moved her backpack from her left shoulder to her right so that she could relieve some of the ache it was giving her while she continued to chase behind Zayda.
"If you can't help me find me a job, then right now just isn't the time," Zayda warned Nya while pacing a few feet ahead of her down the street.
"I might know a friend that could help!" Nya finally caught up with Zayda making her stop and focus on her last statement.
"Help, How?" Zayda now stood with her arms crossed, bearing all of on her weight on her left leg. She looked directly into Nya eyes searching for a lie, or something.
Nya stare was unwavering as she pulled out her cellphone and shot a text to one of the other workers. "Just know that after a few gigs, you'll be okay with money!"
"What's a gig Nya?" Zayda eyed her friend still not 100% with it. "I know you ain't selling pussy?"
Nya hands immediately went to cover her mouth as she tried her best to contain her laughter.
"Omg, who raised you?" Nya put her hand on Zaydas shoulder as she continued to laugh. Nya always admired that about Zayda, she didn't hold her tongue back for anyone.
"I'm just saying, the word 'gig' to me just sounded a lil iffy!"
"Girl would you just chill and listen to your girl," Nya tilted her head as she made eye contact with Zayda, "It's quick money, you'll be straight!" For emphasis, Nya shimmed her fingers as if money occupied them.
"Yeah okay, as long as I ain't selling my pussy then I'm in!" Zayda and Nya shared a laugh then walked off in the direction of the group home that they shared. Nya and Zayda were both the same tender age of 17; unfortunately Zaydas birthday was right around the corner, while Nya had three months left to stack her coins. The countdown for Zaydas exit was already in full affect and whether she was ready or not, she had to leave.
"Who's there?" Zayda fired her gun as a warning shot to whomever was following her. "I shoot niggas for fun just so you know!" Zayda aimed her gun while she hollered out doing a complete 360 degree turnaround, like she was a detective or something. The streets were pitch black and for some odd reason the street lights was out this particular night. Her pace couldn't have been any faster, if she went any faster, it could've easily turned into a slow jog. The growls and footsteps were getting closer and closer to Zayda than she liked. "I said I shoot mother fuckers for fun, you hear that!" Zayda cocked her stolen pistol and was ready to unload it in whomever. The hairs on the back of her neck begin to raise as more and more growls came from out of no where. POW. She shot another warning shot into the air to scare off the person or people. Ring. Ring. Ring. The time was exactly 12:01 when her lit up phone displayed Nyas contact. She quickly tried to slide the answer button but in that moment she was attacked.
