FOR THE FIRST TIME, being in the forest brought Lorelai Swan a wave of anxiety. She couldn't shake off the thoughts regarding the thought she had the other day—the thought that the crazed "animal" attacks could actually be crazed "vampire" attacks. She didn't want to believe that the Cullens had something to do with them, but there was always the small possibility that they were.

Lorelai felt her heart stop when Jasper Hale suddenly appeared by her side. "Jesus, fuck!" she shouted. She stumbled backward, her hand over her chest. She shot Jasper a small glare. "You need to stop doing that. I think I might actually have a heart attack."

"I'm afraid you'll need an actual heart for that to happen," teased Jasper, smiling at her dramatics.

Normally, Lorelai would have laughed; however, she couldn't stop thinking about Waylon's death. It was strange because she hadn't given it much thought until Billy Black brought it up. Upon noticing Lorelai's transparent reaction, Jasper queried, "Is everything okay?"

Lorelai pressed her lips into a line. "Sorry," she mumbled. "I think my dad's just gotten in my head, you know? He's been worried about all those animal attacks, and it got me... thinking."

When Lorelai went silent, Jasper realized it. "You think my family and I are behind those attacks," he said. Lorelai remained silent. "Rory, you know we would never. We've kept peace with humans for decades. You know that."

Lorelai instantly released a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. "Oh, thank God," she sighed. "I didn't think you were, but I'll take the reassurance. I feel like I never know anything these days."

With that being said, Lorelai and Jasper dove into their usual routine of walking aimlessly throughout the forest. "We're positive that vampires have something to do with these attacks. We're just not sure who," informed Jasper. "We've been hunting at night in hopes that we'd run into their scent, but we haven't had much luck."

Lorelai nodded, studying Jasper's features as he continued to speak. As the days drifted on, she was unable to truly comprehend the beauty that was Jasper Hale.

His honey-blonde hair fell in waves down to the edge of his jaw. Unlike his siblings, he was taller, leaner. His skin reminded her of marble. The purple circles under his eyes were the only discernable color on his body. His tawny eyes blazed and his natural military-like stance exuded the barely contained violence of an angry lion.

There was still one more thing that stood out to Lorelai. They were his most prominent feature—white scars. His body was absolutely caked in them, spaced most thickly together on his neck and jaw. She wondered how Jasper got them.
