"Well?" Bey pressed.

I didn't know where to begin with answering her question about my feelings for her. I'd spent more than half of my life being attracted to her. At one point I was convinced I was in love. But I knew it wasn't realistic. Not for the group, and not for our friendship. So I did what I had to do and shut down my feelings.

And now she was telling me she felt the same way I had for so long? Damn.

"You're like a sister to me," I started. "Wait, wait, let me finish." She was glaring at me just from the mention of "sister." "And for so long I've felt ashamed because we're supposed to be family, home girls, best friends...anything more would be too complicated." I gave her a sad smile.

Bey's demeanor softened. "Well no relationship is without conflict, Kelly."

"I know, but us being famous gives a whole 'nother type of conflict."

"They don't have to know."

I was amazed by how casual she was acting about the prospect of us being together. For someone who is a perfectionist and takes her career extremely seriously, it was shocking to say the least that she didn't mind risking all of the hard work and dream.

"I mean, I love our fans, too, but they don't need to know everything," Beyoncé continued, noticing my reaction.

"It's not even just them, though. You're forgetting the elephant in the room here."

Beyoncé's brows furled as she tried to figure out what I was hinting at.

"Who, my dad?"

"Bingo!" I clapped.

She smirked, unfazed by the point I was trying to make. "He'll learn to deal with it."

I laughed. "Beyoncé? Wait, we need to discuss this with Michelle." Since business was involved, it was only right to see how she felt about Beyoncé coming out the closet or not.

"Okay, but I'm trying to discuss you and me right now, while we're here." She leaned forward. "I know you're a little scared, and that's okay, but ain't no use in fighting what you know is true. And real." She brushed her fingers down my hand and arm.

"I love you too much to put you in this position," I confessed, resisting the fire she lit up in my body from a simple touch

She sucked her teeth. "In what position? No one has to know, no one but our family and friends. You're acting like I'm gonna schedule a press conference and tell everyone I'm a lesbian."

Suddenly we heard some shuffling around and Matthew Knowles walked in the living room. I was scared shitless.

"Hi, Papa Knowles!" I forced out, too eagerly.

"Hi," he said cautiously, unsmiling.

"Hey daddy," Bey greeted.

"Hey," he replied in that same tone. "What were y'all talking about?"

Damn, damn, damn! I looked at Bey who stiffened slightly but otherwise kept her composure, like she was so used to doing.

"Were you eavesdropping?" she chuckled.

He didn't say anything. My phone started to ring and I saw it was Brandon calling me.

"Are you gonna answer that?" Matthew asked me when I let it ring.

Bey was staring at my phone and her gaze was cold at the display of Brandon's name.

"Um, I'll call him back," I decided and pressed the side button on my phone, reducing the sound to a vibration.

As much as I wanted to dodge a potential argument between Beyoncé and her dad, I couldn't leave her hanging like this, not when it seemed like shit was about to absolutely hit the fan like never before.

"Who was that?" Matthew inquired. Now that he knew the caller was a "he," he was interested.

"Oh, just a friend."

"A friend or a boyfriend?"

"A friend. I don't have a boyfriend," I reminded him. I looked at Bey who was still perturbed.

Matthew stared at the both of us. Or studied, rather.

"What was that you were saying about a press conference and lesbian, Beyoncé?"

I forced out a laugh. "She was being sarcastic," I lied. "You know how goofy she can get." I nudged Beyoncé, hoping she'd go along with it. She barely smiled.

"Are you sure?" Matthew asked, doubtful. "Is there something you need to tell me? And I'm not asking you, Kelly, I'm talking to Beyoncé."

"There's nothing to tell," Beyoncé said, standing up. "How was the meeting you went to?"

"Good," he answered, surprisingly pleased about a change in subject. "I met with Shawn and his manager. Tomorrow you will be meeting him."

Beyoncé's facial expression looked like the room suddenly stunk. I had to tighten my chest to prevent a laugh. But I was smart enough to know none of this was actually funny.

"Why?" she asked in a tone that matched her visage.

"You think I want people thinking my daughter's gay?" He shot her a knowing look.

For the first time all day, my best friend looked nervous.
