As he walked the halls of his high school, he knew most of the kids there didn't like him. He's foreign, gay, anxious, depressed, what's there to like about him, any way? Nothing. At least that's what everyone else thought. His best friend Kayla, constantly assured him otherwise.
"They're just angry that you're an intellectual. Most of them don't even have half a brain." Kayla said, keeping her voice down as Troye reached into his locker to grab his books.
"Kay, you know I don't believe that for a second, so don't waste your breath."
"Uh Troye, Jacob, 12 o'clock."
"Thanks, Kay." Troye said, closing his locker and purposely turning around to face his bully. He was going to get hit or pushed or something, so he may as well see it coming, literally.
"Faggot." Jacob said as he pushed the books out of Troye's hands.
"Here, let me help," Jacob said sincerely, and just when Troye thought he was being genuine, Jacob grabbed the back of Troye's head, hair in fist. "You'd like that, wouldn't you, bitch. To get close to me. Well fuck you, dick sucker."
"Shut up, Jacob. Why don't you and your friends run off now." Kayla said, seeing the tears fill Troye's eyes. They did, it seemed like they were scared of Kayla. They should be.
Troye didn't know why he was crying, this happened all the time.
Kayla had so much Troye didn't, but mainly, she had the guts to stand up to Jacob and the others. She was different, she could've easily been one of the popular kids— she's pretty and a cheerleader and has a nice body and pretty eyes and straight teeth and- she was perfect. The definition of the high school 'it' girl, but she was friends with Troye and for that reason, the cheerleaders wanted her off the squad, her physical appearance suddenly meaning nothing. All they knew about her was that she was friends with Troye, and they didn't want to know more.
Kayla and Troye picked up the books together and Kayla marched Troye to the (thankfully gender-neutral) bathroom, so he could collect himself before Mr. Reboore's 7th period English. The last class of the day. One more hour. It would help if Troye didn't have every class with Jacob. Troye was a freshman, key word being 'was'. He's too smart for the freshman courses so he takes Sophomore classes. Jacob's a Sophomore. Fucking hell, the universe seemed to hate Troye.
