World War 1 poem -

Today is the day,

We can smell change in the air,

The suspense is a killer,

Many of us are in despair.

Then the news came,

From higher up our ranks,

It was everyone's worst nightmare,

To whom no one would be saying thanks.

We were told to 'go over the top',

And into no man's land,

Our fates sealed,

It was the worst command.

So off we went,

Over the top and into no man's land,

We knew that many of us would not be returning,

That we did understand.

Fellow men fell around me,

Hit by a bullet or shell,

I knew this was it,

This would be my final farewell.

So many lives were lost on this fateful day,

Like thousands of others,

Now I am only remembered as forgotten,

As we all fell as brothers.
