Drowsily clambering out of bed, I stumbled into the shower. I always have the water on cold at first to wake me up, but then I turn it gradually warmer. Today was my first day of school as a freshman at Derry High, yet also the last day of the school year, because my parents insisted I completed the last day of school. Stepping out of the shower, I put on my usual jeans and tee shirt, brushing my hair. I did my makeup simply, leaving the bathroom and quickly eating a bowl of yogurt and granola for breakfast before grabbing my bag and stepping out the door.
I began pedaling my bike, quickly going the short distance to school. I rushed into home room.
In second period, math, a cute guy with curly hair sat next to me. I was mildly drawn to him; he was neat but not boring. I could just tell. After class, he joined a group of three other boys. He was the quiet one of the group; one was a loud boy with dark, curly hair, one was a small boy with bags under his eyes, and one boy looked haunted.
I thought about the boy throughout the day, trying to remember his name. It clicked at the very end of the day: Stanley Uris. That was the name he had identified with in roll call. Class let out, and I went into the bathroom, where I heard sobbing and accusations of things like whore and slut. Storming over to where these names were being called, I pulled a bitch away from a redhead. The bitch was holding a trash bag and had been about to pour it over the ginger girl.
"What do you think you're doing?" I asked furiously.
"None of your business, bitch," she replied.
"I think it is," I replied dangerously, "This won't happen again."
Sensing the danger in my tone and remembering the strength of my grip before, the girl backed off and left with her bitch friends.
"You okay?" I asked the redhead quietly. "We haven't met; I'm new. Y/n y/l/n," I introduced myself, "but you can call me n/n."
"Yeah, thanks," the redhead replied, "I'm Beverly Marsh."
"My absolute and genuine pleasure, Beverly. I hate it when people are hurt for no good reason. So anytime," I replied.
She smiled. "Are we friends?"
"If you'll have me," I replied.
"Great," she replied genuinely. "And again, thank you."
I smiled, offering her a hand. She took it.
"I should get going. See you around? Maybe tomorrow at noon in the Barrens?" Beverly asked.
"The barrens?" I asked.
"You really are new. In the woods by the stream. You know it?"
"Yeah. Okay, see you then," I replied.
Beverly left and I followed, leaving the school grounds.
"Hey, bitch. You're the new girl," a voice said.
"Hey, bitch, go away," I replied uninterestedly.
"What did you say?" The voice asked.
Louder, I said, "Hey bitch, go away."
"Do you know who I am?" He asked.
"Don't know, don't care," I replied.
"You're gonna care," he said.
"Am I?" I asked, turning. Three boys, a year or two older than me, stood before me. I raised an eyebrow, dropping my school bag. Stepping forward, I swept the guy's legs out from under him, kicked one of his cronies in the balls, and broke the other's nose. I kicked the leader in the head, singing, "Hey bitch, regret that now?"
I picked up my school bag and went home to dump it and get ready for summer.
