While walking past the old thrift store on Mahogany Street, an elderly man nailing a flyer to the wall catches my eye. I can view a few small details, such as the seal of the government and the word 'silence' in bright red letters.
I walk over, intrigued. A small group of people, likely a mother, a father, and their son stop by, likely for the same reason I have. The father, looking grey in his years, let's out a loud gasp. The mother, a shriek, as she clutches the arms of her husband and son and rushes off to the north.
I debated rushing after them, but the flyer was still my main priority. I skimmed through, getting an idea of why they ran away so quickly. Then it hit me.
"By order of the global administration, we are allowing 1 silence for every life. In turn, we wish to further our society by allowing only the most civil to continue. This act will take action on January 14th, 2012."
I unlock my phone, and glance at the calendar. January 7th, 2012. I have one week to make amends to those I've wronged, and to those who have accused myself of doing wrong. I look up to the sky and hope that I haven't made any grave mistakes, worth my life.
I go about my day as the usual, going to Petunia's diner to get my lunch and cappuccino, working another grueling 6 hours, walking home through the suburbs I call my own. Its now 9:34pm, and I think about the flyer as I drift off into a deep slumber.
