Everyday is a gift. But just like most things in life, in an instant, it can all be taken away. Life is precious to everyone, but for me it's especially meaningful. My dad died suddenly of a heart attack. A healthy man, merely 32. Nowadays, me, my mom, and my 12 year old sister look at each day as a gift, never knowing if it would be our last. And who knew, my last day could've been sooner than expected...

I sat at lunch surrounded by my 4 friends, Evan, Peggy, Alec, and Simon. We all met in preschool, and have been best friends ever since. Alec and Simon were twins, the only difference between them being Simon's black rimmed glasses. Alec grins at me before pecking my cheek.
"So, girlfriend, you ready for date night?" He asks me, his grin widening as he throws his arm around my shoulder.
I blush as Peggy giggles at me. Alex and I started dating a month ago, and tonight was our first official date.
"Get a room you two!" Evan says while throwing a fry at Alec's head, who skillfully catches it his mouth. Simon rolls his eyes at his brother before continuing to read his book.
"Don't you think that you're a little old to be reading Harry Potter?" Evan asks.
Simon glares at him. "You are never to old!"
I glance over at Peggy just in time to see her sneak a glance at Simon. She catches my eye and I wiggle my eyes at her.
"Peggy! Can you come into the hallway with me?" I ask her smirking.
"S-sure"
We walk outside of the cafeteria as the boys share confused glances. I smile at her.
"So you and Simon, huh?"
"I-it's just a harmless crush... Besides, I really don't think he feels the same way, anyway..."
"Why would you say that? Your beautiful, smart, a pain in the butt sometimes but aren't we all?"
We laugh. Me and Peggy had always grown up as sisters. She was always there for me, especially when my dad died. We used to pretend we were sisters, although we look nothing alike. Peggy has light brown hair that falls a little passed her shoulders and blue eyes. She was tall compared to me, standing 5 inches above my 5'2". I, on the other hand, have long fiery red hair and green eyes. Sometimes I wished I could have had the brown-red hair of my younger sister, Quinn.
"What about you, Jess? How are things with Alec?"
I smile. "Couldn't be better. I'm really happy."
She opens her mouth to reply to me, when all of a sudden an ear piercing scream is heard, followed by a bang that echoed through the school. We both freeze, staring at each other with wide eyes. That's when the screams start.
"Was that a-"
"I think it was."
People in the hallways start to run into classrooms, a few teachers ushering everyone inside. Those who don't get in run.
"Where are the boys?!" Peggy yells over the noise, panic in her voice.
Right on cue, people begin to stream out of the cafeteria, hanging onto the hands of friends for dear life, booking it to classrooms.
"PEG! JESS!"
We turn our heads to see the boys running at us full speed, terror in their eyes.
"C'mon we need to find a place to hide!" Evan shouts over the commotion.
Alec grabs my hand and I grab Peggy's. The five of us make our way to an old science classroom that haven't been used in years. The guys lock the door, then begin to pile desks and tables in front of the door. Me and Peggy work on closing up the windows, then together we move the empty bookshelf in front of them.
"Over here." Alec whispers.
Me and Peggy look at each other before tip-toeing over to the L-shaped teachers desk pushed into the corner of the room. We hop over the top of the desk and crouch underneath where the boys are. Alec's arms are around me immediately. No one speaks, no one makes any grand movements, and for a minute I forget to breath. Tears form in my eyes, but I can't cry. I shift closer to Alec, who tightens his arms. I turn my head to see Simon sitting in between Evan and Peggy. My eyes travel to Peggy and Simon's joined hands. Had the circumstances been different, I would have been giddy with joy for my best friends. Alec runs his fingers through my hair, his eyes locked on his brother. Both were intently looking at each other, but this time Evan was also in their little mind talk. Alec gently takes his arms from around me, then shifts so that he is sitting in front of me. I see Simon do the same for Peggy, and Evan shifts so that we're both out of view even more.
"If anyone gets in here, we're not letting them get to you." Alec says as quietly as he can, with Simon and Evan nodding in agreement.
My heart swells, and I glance over at Peggy to see tears streaming down her face, Simon still gripping her hand. I press my face into Alec's back, wrapping my arms around his waist. A second bang breaks our bubble of silence, and Peggy let's out a whimper. Simon turns slightly and murmurs comforting words to her. Alec placed his hands on top of mine and plays with my fingers. Tears finally begin to roll down my face fast when everything settles in.
This is real. This is all happening. It's not a dream. I could die right here, right now.
