The sound of movement roused Arabelle from her fitful sleep on the couch. She had to admit, it wasn't the most comfortable places to sleep, not when she was used to sleeping on the softest queen bed she could get her hands on. Her eyes focused on the figure shifting, her mate.

She watched as Derek quietly got off the bed, his steps quiet and almost imperceptible. He slowly walked to the bathroom, pausing every few steps to make sure that she wouldn't wake up. He would make a good stealth operative, she thought to herself. She quickly shoved that thought out of her mind, that was her mate and he would be staying at home where he would be protected. But the pride she felt with that first thought wouldn't go away. Not that she needed those thoughts to be proud of him. The fact that he was able to withstand years of torture in his old pack made her chest bloom with pride.

Derek slowly crept into the bathroom, and out of Arabelle's line of sight. Only after the light turned on and and the sound of running water hit her enhanced hearing she sat up. She slowly reached for her phone.

3:26 A.M.

BellaSwan: r u up

Leviathan: when am i not

BellaSwan: My mate just woke up and went to take a shower????? why is he up so early

Leviathan: idk man. he was an omega before tho right

Leviathan: maybe he thinks he still has to do his omega stuff

Arabelle put her phone down on her chest, sighing. The best course of action would be to tell him he didn't have to do anything. But he hates her right now. He would have rejected her had Levy not intervened. He'd probably pass out again, and seeing her mate in pain was not something she wanted.

Not to mention she adoptted a little girl from his old pack too. What was she thinking. She was barely taking care of herself, and her mate hated her. What made her think she was ready for a child. This was yet another reason her parents didn't leave her the pack. She was too impulsive.

Her phone buzzed, giving her chest a weird feeling. She picked it up and read the message.

3:30 A.M.
Leviathan: why did u even text me? we have mindlink for a reason

Arabelle let out a soft giggle, before shaking her head.

'Would you have rather me interupted you while you should be asleep.' She waited for a response from Levy, but all she got was a defeated sigh.

'Are you gonna tell him he doesn't have to do anything?' Levy asked through the mindlink.

Arabelle didn't answer her. 'So why are you up anyways?'

You know I don't sleep. That's why we get death coffee from Mrs.Hubris.'

The shower stopped running, and Arabelle realized she had only a few moments before she had to chose what she would do.

'We'll talk about you lying straight into my mind in the morning. What should I do?' The distress must have shown in her mindvoice, because when Levy responded with a more serious tone.

'Well, I would tell my mate everything, because communication is an important part of a healthy relationship. Your mate is used to being abused, so it will take a long time for him to open up and trust you. You of all people know that. I would take it slow, try and get him used to your presence. That's what I would if I had your mate.'

Arabelle could have cried with joy at that moment, and she sent those emotions over the bond. But she got an overwhelming sadness.

'If I had a mate, that is.'

Her tone hurt Arabelle. She hated it when Levy was in pain, whether it be physical or emotional. Everyone in this pack had experienced some heartbreak in the years after the war. Levy had lost her mate. Maybe Arabelle wouldn't bring this up in the morning.

The click of the bathroom door took her out of her thoughts. How should she approach this. Should she pretend to have just woken up, or should she just sit up. But wouldn't that scare him. She knew she didn't want to see him in pain. But she didn't want to lie-

Derek walked out of the bathroom, as quiet as he was when he entered it. Already dressed in his rags from the day before. He froze when he saw her sitting up.

""You're up early." She said quietly.

He jumped back, fear in his eyes. Her  heart shattered at his reaction.

"I-I'm sorry if I woke you Alp- I mean Ms.Arabelle." She winced at his words. He still didn't view himself as her equal. It had only been a day, she didn't know why she had expected an immediate change.

"You didn't wake me up. I had to be up in a few minutes anyway." He had indeed woken her up. She normally wouldn't be up until four in the morning. Maybe four thirty if she had went to bed at three.

As she stared at him, he fidgeted and began slowly began shuffling towards the door.

"Why are you uo so early Derek?" She asked him, slowly sitting up on her couch.

"I was going to k-kitchens. I have b-breakfast duty." He told her.

"You don't have to work anymore sweetheart. Your my mate. That makes you the Aleph." She softly explained to him. She hoped she might at least get him to get more sleep.

""B-but that's not fair to the other omegas Alpha."

He immediately caught himself, his eyes wide with fear."I'm sorry I spoke out of place."

""No, its fine. What do you mean its not fair to the other omegas?"

He looked shocked that she even wanted her opinion. He began to speak, before stopping himself. She motioned with her head for him to continue.

"Its um, its not fair because I-I uh haven't w-worked to g-gain this title. I j-just got here with many other omegas and I-I'm the only one w-who isn't an o-omega anymore. T-there are people who have been here longer who still omegas. I h-haven't done anything special."

She was surprised by his answer, but it almost made sense. He was only singled out because he was her mate, which was a one in a billion chance. Had he have not been her mate, or if he had rejected her, he would still be an omega. With all technicalities he hadn't done anything special.

"I mean you exist. That's special. Something only you can do. You fill a void in my heart that only you can. That's special too."

His face flushed, and she smiled at him.

"I should r-really get to the kitchens. I have breakfast duty." There was less stuttering in that statement, so there was some progress.

"You really don't have to. And besides, even if you were still an omega, you wouldn't be starting to cook. You would be starting to train."

He let out a defeated sigh. "I guess I'll g-go train."

"Yea, I guess you should have at least some self defense skills seeing as you're my mate and this pack's Aleph."

A dark look entered her eyes. "Not that I'd let anyone hurt you."

He shuddered and hurried out of the room, and she internally kicked herself. She must have scared him again. And she was making so much progress. It dawned on her that he probably didn't even know where the training rooms were. He had twenty-eight minutes to figure it out.

Unless of course, he decided to come back and ask. But she wasn't so sure she would let him leave if he did. She doubted she had that much self control.

Setting an alarm for four in the morning, she climbed into her bed. She curled up un the sheets, releshing in her mate's scent, before falling asleep. And if a few tears were shed before that, she would never tell.

Because a good leader doesn't let the world see her cry. That's something she learned the hard way.

A/N: I'm so sorry for how late this turned out. I wasn't in a good mental place, and my computer broke, and I had zero inspiration for this. But done with the excuses. The next chapter will be up before this month is over.
