12 / Too Many Books

Start from the beginning

"Leo, maybe we should take you back to camp. Get Chrion to look at you, he'll now what to do-"

"No!" I said immediately. "We need to find Calypso! Whatever's wrong with me, it can wait. We must find her, and fast. Who knows what might happen to her if we don't find her!"

"But-"

"No buts." I said firmly. I managed to pull myself to my feet. "Look, I'm fine! Let's get going."

Annabeth looked like she wanted to protest, but I marched out and onto the street and she followed.

~

We wondered through the streets if Los Angeles. Trying to follow some garbled instructions from a shop owner on how to find Waterrock Library.

We didn't talk.

The pain had gone, but I could tell Annabeth was already planning how to convince me to go back to camp.

I wasn't going. End off. Nothing was going to stop me finding Calypso.

I paused at a junction, Annabeth stood next to me.

A shadow of a person who wasn't there moved silently through the crowds.

As I watched, I saw her.

Graceful, moving through the crowds as if they were nothing but smoke.

She wouldn't turn to face me, I couldn't see her face. She's wearing a long silver clock with a hood.

I thought for a second that I saw her make a swift beckoning motion with her hand, and she turned away down a side street.

"Come on!" I shouted to Annabeth, as I sprinted across the road towards the place where the mysterious lady had vanished.

"What- Leo!" she yelled, running after me.

I ran flat out down the narrow side street.

I was narrow, lined with back doors that lead into the shops on either side of the main roads.

I burst out the far end of the street and searched the crowds pedestrians.

I saw her, moving swift and silent through the crowds.

"Come on!" I shouted to Annabeth again and set if down the pavement.

She was on the other side of the road from us. Every now and again, I would loose sight of her in the crowds if people. But we mustn't loose her now.

The street ended in a T junction and I skidded to a stop.

Annabeth caught up and leant on my shoulder.

"Oh my gods Leo! Don't ever run of like that, you most gave me a heart attack-"

"Shh." I said irritably.

I can't see her anymore. She's vanished again. Like she did last time.

Last time... Last time she showed me the way to Nemesis, what if this time...

"Look," I instructed Annabeth. "Look around, can you see that shop anywhere, it must be close..."

"Leo!" Aanabeth gasped, she pointed to a shop window opposite where we were standing.

"Genius." I told her, squeezing her hand briefly in mine.

Waterrock Library.

~

I hate libraries. Too many books.

Books aren't good for me. Too much information and my brain just melts-down.

Strange that my teachers at school never believed me when I told the that.

I hung around outside the library's double door while Annabeth talked to a lady at the desk inside.

The lady was checking something in a computer. She said something to Annabeth and disappeared through a door behind the desk.

Annabeth sneezed I glance at me.

'Gone to get the book' she mouthed.

The lady, librarian I presume, re-appeared a minute later with a large book.

She handed it to Annabeth.

I glanced around the street, chrome cling for anything that looks even vaguely like a monster.

That's the second reason I don't like libraries - last time I was here, my fav Ice Princess tried to kiss me to death.

Her silver cloak seemed to float around her, like it was lighter than the actual air.

She paused for a minute and then turned to look at me.

And I stood, frozen to the ground because it was Calypso

Annabeth tapped my arm.

"Come on Leo, I got it! The book!" she said.

I couldn't reply.

Calypso had vanished, I couldn't see her anymore.

Annabeth dragged me with her to a table outside a small cafe.

She put the book down on the table in front if me.

"Well," she said after a pause, "what do you think?"

"Uh, what?" I said, I'm smart that way.

"The book!" she sighed, exasperated. "Look at it Leo! It's an atlas!"

I stared at her.

An atlas? How would that help? I saw her, I'm sure of it! Why was Annabeth so wound up over a book?

An atlas...

Oh my gods, Atlas!
