“Lucy!!! Hurry up or you’ll be late!”

Just once could I wake up to the warm sun shining in my room?

No, because I am a high school student and I’m not aloud to.

“Lucy!! You have ten minutes till I leave or you’re catching the bus or walking!”

I know I have to get up, but I’m so warm under the covers.

            Finally I give in.

I walk to my door and see my brother, Reece, at the top of the stairs.  He’s standing there just staring at me with a cheeky grin.  I know this situation so well.

The bathroom is exactly in the middle of us, and we both want it.

Fortunately for me, I know how to get it.

The rules are that if one of us stop, we both have to stop and go back the same distance as the other.

I look like I’m getting ready to run.

            He starts running.

“Hahaha, you’re an idiot! Go back!”

Reece walks back slowly, but this is where my devious plans come in.

When we made the rules, I let Reece make them for two reasons: One, because he’s younger. Two, I could manipulate them.

He only made one rule. Which was if any of us stopped we had to go back to where the other person is.

He never said anything about running while the other person is still walking back to their original place.

            I took my chance!

As soon as his back was turned, I ran towards the bathroom.

Once he got there he turned around and saw me running.

            “Hey! That’s not fair Lucy!”

“You never said anything about running while you were still resetting. Haha!”

            SLAM!

I closed the door in his face.

“Hey, are you guys still here?”

            No answer.

I walked downstairs and saw a note pinned to my bag:

Lucy,

I’ve left you some food for your lunch in the fridge.

There is some money in the box near the door for the bus.

Mum

xx

I know I’m in for a lecture when I get home.

I look up at the clock.

            “Oh my gosh!”

I was 10 minutes late.  I better start walking.

*************************

            RING RING!

“Okay, for homework I want you to find out the last 5 generations of your family tree.”

I walk out of the class staring at the ground.

            “Hey, Lucy! Are you okay?”

It was Daniel, my best friend.

            “Hey, Daniel. Yeah, I’m fine…”

“Spill, what happened this time? Is it the whole family thing?”

“You know me too well.  Yeah, it is.  Miss Cook gave us homework, which is we have to find the last 5 generations of our family tree.  I hate being adopted!”

“You know you can always just do your adopted family’s family tree?”

“I know, but it’s not the same.  You know I’ve always wanted to know who my real family was but they said it was a closed adoption.  My biological family doesn’t want anything to do with me!”

Daniel stops talking.  I know he doesn’t know what to say.  He never does when I tell him that.

Eventually he stops us walking and gives me a hug.  He always gives me a hug right when I’m about to cry.  He knows me too well.

            I begin to cry.

“Hey, don’t cry.  It will be alright!”

“No it wont be!” I say in between my sobs.

“It will be.” Daniel pushes me away! “I have something for you.”

            I wipe my eyes.

I see Daniel reach into his bag and pull out a cylindrical postage box.

He pulls out a roll of paper and then stops and stares at me with a huge grin on his face.

            “WHAT?!” I say

“You know how you said that there was no way you could find out who your biological parents are?”

“Yeah, its impossible because it was a closed adoption.” I look at him confused.  How has my adoption got anything to do with cheering me up?

            “Well, it wasn’t completely a closed adoption…”

“WHAT?!” I basically dive on him, trying to get the paper.

            Daniel steps back.

“We shouldn’t discuss this in the open.  Let’s go back to mine, hey?”

            “Okay…”
