Destiny Taylor

I was moving like a zombie while gettin' ready for school.

My mom came barging in my room while I was doing my makeup.

"I'm glad I had clothes on." I sucked my teeth.

There's no such thing as privacy in this house. Even with the door closed.

When I realized my mom didn't say anything I turned to look at her. She had a distressed look on her face.

"Mom, what's wrong?" I gulped.

"Des, sit down baby."

"Mommy, you're scaring me! Tell me what's wrong?"

"It's your brother..he passed away earlier this morning." She sniffed.

I couldn't even say anything. My mouth was to dry, my heart sunk to my stomach.

My eyes began to burn as the hot tears streamed down my face.

My mom walked over and pulled me into a hug.

"I know baby, he's in a better place. No more suffering." She rubbed my back.

"My- my brother...he's really gone?" I choked.

My mom nodded her head as she sniffed.

"I don't think you should go to school." My mom ran her fingers through my hair.

"I-I'll be okay. I just have to get my self together. I have a test today I can't miss it."

My mom went to the bathroom to wet a washcloth and brung it back to me.

"Here clean your face."

"I'm so heartbroken. Why? Why did he have to leave me?"

"It was all gods plan baby. Your brother isn't suffering anymore."

"H-how's daddy holdin' up?"

"Not good at all. I'm going to go stay with him tonight."

"I'll call him later."

I got my mom to drop me off at school before she went to work.

I walked to class with my head down.

I felt empty.

"Good morning class." My child development professor greeted us.

I rested my head in the palm of my left hand while I used my right hand to jot down notes.

I was doing good in class until the professor went off topic. They started talking about skeletons which is how I last remembered my brother.

He lost so much weight that I could see his bones, his face was so skinny.

A lump formed in my throat. I felt the tears run down my face again.

I got up to run to the bathroom. I cried so much that I began to gag. I was making myself sick.

I used a paper towel to clean my face before I went back to class.
