--------Bennie's POV-------------

Waking up in the morning was never an easy task, especially when my body ached from the beating I'd caught the night before.

I groaned as my stiff joints and muscles stretched and protested my movements.

My father's voice boomed in my ears from the bottom of the stairs.

"Bennie! Get your ass down here right now and make me some breakfast!"

Quickly, I slipped some clothes on from one of the various piles of clothing that lay strewn about the room.

I descended the stairs quickly and mumbled an apology to my father earning a grunt in response.

I subtly examined the small scar that now ran across my temple with my fingers.

I felt my anger rise once again as the oil in the pan, the same pan he had used to give me my newest addition, popped on my hands.

I felt my father's voice before I heard it.

"Why the hell is it taking you so long? By the gods, Bennie hurry up."

I quickly finished the eggs and dropped them onto clean plates, wiping the excess oil from the rim. Placing the eggs in front of him I took care to not provoke him further, hoping this meal was sufficient enough to satisfy him.

"I said fried, not raw."

He spat the eggs out in disgust, standing quickly and towering over my slightly trembling body. I felt the sting of his hand before I had any time to react, and I hit the staircase with a resounding, thud.

I bit my tongue to keep myself from growling and instead walked back over the table, grabbing the plate and making my way into the kitchen once more.

"Fix me another plate!" He shouted before huffing and sitting back in his chair.

I felt the slow moving heat of the smoke piling up in the kitchen as I fried another set of eggs and bacon. Knowing my mother would be up soon I toasted some bread and set it aside for her.

She was just as abusive as my father, if not, worse. She preferred to use 'instruments' to inflict pain as opposed to her own strength. Anything that resembled a weapon she would use to abuse me as long as it didn't stain her clothes.

After being promptly excused from breakfast by my father, I arrived at school about ten minutes late and took a seat in the very back of the English classroom.

My parents were traveling omegas, my father worked collecting data for various Alphas on territory expansions or new pack additions. This was the third pack we'd been a part of in the past three years, but going to an integrated Lycan/human school had its advantages, there were less mates and lesser standards for imitating human behavior.

When going to an all Lycan school you're expected to be competitive in all aspects of learning or physicality. There are cliques and few Alpha males, and nearly everyone is mated by the end of the four years. I was not as fortunate, I was nearing my eighteenth year and still I was unmarked, and without a mate. This made me appear weak to most Lycans, however they knew very little about the mischief of gods.

While it was true that every mated couple goes through their first shift together, I seemed to be an exception. Your first shift was the most painful, so to have your mate with you is a blessing, and if you don't have one by the time you're sixteen you don't shift until you're marked.

This wasn't the case for me.

Being brought out of my trance by my teacher calling my name I walked up to the front of the class.

"The office just called, pack your things up you're going home." He spoke in a low voice and I felt myself becoming puzzled as I shoved my belongings into my tattered and frayed backpack.

I found my mother in the office sneering at a terrified looking girl as she handed her a piece of paper.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and cleared my throat to make my presence known.

"Mom...is something wrong?" I asked.

"No of course not. I'm here to pick you up. Your father got a call from Mr. Lican, we're moving down to Woodside."

My eyes widened and before I could stop myself I asked, "Why?"

She rolled her eyes.

"Stupid child. Your father has been called upon by one of the great Lycan families to help them with reporting rogues and on-boarding the victims."

I nodded and followed her as she led us out of the school and into her car, feeling confused as she turned out of the parking lot and drove in a direction opposite to the way to the house. I thought it best not to question her, I was too exhausted already.

Eventually she spoke to me, not bothering to turn and acknowledge me.

"I'm taking you to the mall. Your father insists on you looking presentable so I'm trusting you to pick out some decent clothes and things for yourself. If you come back to this car looking less than acceptable, you'll be wishing your life was hell."

She pulled into the parking lot and rummaged through her purse, pulling her credit card from her wallet and tossing it to me.

"I'll be waiting for you, you have three hours."

She didn't give me any time to respond before she was pushing my shoulder and rushing me out of the car.

After a grueling three hours I trudged my way back to the parking lot with each arm full of bags of clothing, hair care products, makeup for coverups, and a new haircut.

Finally making it to the car, she did me the courtesy of opening the trunk so I could pile the bags in before finding the passenger side and taking my seat.

"You're five minutes late, we're going home. Your father is expecting us."

I remained silent and so did she as we drove back to the house.

When we arrived at the house I grabbed my backpack, bags and opened the door, letting my mother walk in first before trudging up the stairs to my own room.

It had barely been a minute before I heard the front door slam, indicating that my father was home.

I ran down the stairs and hastily took his coat from him, sliding it onto the coat rack with shaking hands in anticipation of his reaction to my new look.

He sighed and straightened his tie before turning around to face me.

"Did your mother tell-"

He took in my appearance, which must have been startling because he did not speak.

"At least you look presentable. When we get to the Lican residence don't ever look the prophet or her mate in the eyes, it's disrespectful. You will do whatever the pack tells you to do and you will not complain, do you understand me?"

He asked, and I nodded before he grabbed my chin forcefully.

"I said, do you understand me?"

"Y-yes, I understand."

He pushed my jaw away and spoke.

"Go upstairs, we leave tomorrow...and Bennie?"

I turned around.

"Yes?"

I replied.

"There will me no mentioning of your punishments, otherwise you're in for a rude awakening. One you've never seen before."

I nodded and walked back up the stairs.

Tomorrow, everything would change.
