Ugh! I thought to myself as I stood in the longest line of existence. Of coarse my sister had to talk me into meeting her favorite YouTuber at the mall today. Her birthday. That's the only reason I said yes.
His name was Jake. Jake something. I cant quite remember due to the fact that I couldn't care less about his content. See, he was one of those boys with the blonde flippy hair that every 14 year old girl loved, including my sister even though he was way to old for them. Once a week he would post some challenge video with other guys who looked exactly like him where they all eventually took their shirt off and boom viral.
As a 19 year old older sister who was only in town from college for the next 2 weeks on Winter vacation I made it my goal to spend as much time with her as possible. No matter what. Which means that I am stuck here until she gets a poster with his face on it signed and maybe a Snapchat selfie where they both look like dogs. Yay me.
There were still about 30 people in line ahead of us and we had already been standing here for 2 hours. I don't know how many times he was willing to write his name but I was beginning to worry that maybe my sister wasn't going to meet the "love of her life". The line slowly kept moving up closer and closer and once he was in obvious view I knew that she was not going to leave without some sort of interaction.
"Kayla, I don't know if this is going to happen today. He's been out here a while, they might want to pack up soon." I said hesitantly. At this point she was sitting on the ground with her Starbucks beside her thinking the same thing.
"Hannah! That is not an option. We drove 2 hours to be here and I am not going home empty handed, that is worse than not being able to come at all. I am meeting Jake Barker. " She said. I could have sworn that there were tears forming in her eyes, and the determination was nauseating.
She was right, we had waited this long so we just needed to see what happened. As much as I wanted to go home, and believe me I did, I knew how much this Justin Bieber wannabe meant to her so there I sat.
As we tried to waste the time, sitting in the Barnes and Nobles, we had moved up so there were only about 10 (These girls really took their time with him) I could feel someones eyes watching me. Every once in a while we would both glance over at him signing something for a young girl or even see him get up to take a break to drink some water and pee. And every time we made some sort of eye contact. I thought it was all in my head until other people started to notice that he would glace in our direction almost every 30 seconds. The moms in line behind began their high school gossip and my sisters new friends even noticed.
It wasn't until we walked up that I finally knew what they had meant.
"Hi, how are you?" He said directed towards Kayla.
"Ummm" She stuttered.
"Great!" I replied for her as casually as possible, trying to save my sister from the embarrassment she would feel tomorrow of making a complete fool of herself in front of the man of her dreams.
"That's what I like to hear. What's your name?" he said, again directed towards her. He had his pen ready to sign her name but she stared blankly at him like she was daydreaming her and the poster on her wall.
"Kayla, and i'm Hannah." I said. I was trying to make conversation in case she randomly came to her senses and asked one of the many questions she was dying to know the answer to. Or maybe enough time for her to stutter out the words "I love you" to him.
"Those are beautiful names." He replied. But this time his statement was directed towards me.
Now, I was never one to think that I was in love with a famous person based on looks but. The way Jake was looking at me with those brown eyes and white smile I suddenly felt like maybe I was wrong in criticizing everything about him on the 2 hour drive here.
After Kayla had spoken little to no words, he had signed the poster, they took the most awkward selfie I had ever witnessed, he wrote something on a tiny post-it and handed it to me.
