It was October in my home town of Orahawkton (Aura-Hawk-tin) when it Rang. I was cleaning the house before the love of my life got home from work when I heard the chiming of the division bell. My heart dropped as the ringing pierced my ears. The division bell was built after the 5th world war in 3407 to signify the unity of the world when some one rang the central bell, smaller copies of the bell scattered all over the world would ring as well. The ringing of this bell signified the final extinction... the extinction of man kind. the specifics of this extinction were not meant to be clear, via disease, War, natural disaster ext. but I knew it meant one thing, I must get to the bunker. I dropped every thing and ran to the town square to follow the masses, I waited in line for 5 or 6 minutes when the line stopped moving. I checked the town monitors and watched the numbers rise, "DING!"..."DING!"...."DING!" one by one each bunker filled up and I was running out of hope, I became desperate and began begging people for a spot in the bunker but they all refused. 10 or 20 minutes passed after that and the town became ghostly, only a few unlucky folks, as well as myself, didn't make a spot in the limited bunkers. "Hey, you! Out there on the road, getting lonely, Getting old! can you help me!?" A man yelled. I looked but no one appeared, "Hey You! Down here!" He yelled again, I looked down and saw him, he was locked in a prison below a cop station, the window at the top of the cell just reached street levels to let in natural light. "So are you gonna sit there or help me?" He bickered.
"Yeah, sorry. I dozed off a little" I replied
"Well hurry then, we haven't got all day, ha just kidding" he chuckled at his joke
I entered the police office and searched around a little. I would arm myself with weapons but ever since the building of the division bell police forces all over the world have begun using non-lethal solutions and replaced guns with low-grade tasers and pepper sprays. I took a teaser and an old multi tool one of the old officers forgot on their desk. I grabbed the keys and headed to the lower level to free any poor souls who have no chance of escape. "Over here!" the man directed, His cell was the 5th one down on the right. I open the cage and he thanked me, "So I freed you from incarceration now you ex-plane why you were in there in the first place so I know not hanging out with a cereal killer" I said
"you have nothing to worry about, I was only on temporary suspension for petty theft" he replied
"OOooh, ok," I said in relief. We started wandering the town when black clouds started gathering in the sky. We continued to wander and start small talk but after a while, we needed to talk business. " so what next?" I asked
" well, we have no clue why they are in the bunkers so we don't know how to prepare, but! There is a backup bunker far off that's 100x bigger to store anyone like us" he replied.
"So where is this bunker?" I asked intrigued now. " well come to my place and I'll show you," he replied. I wasn't quite sure what to think as I followed him, I just freed this random guy from prison and now he's luring me into his house with no witnesses. We got to his house and entered it, " just a moment" he hollered as ran down the stairs. I walked to the kitchen and looked around, I grabbed one of his knives from the kitchen and slipped into my coat pocket in case he attacks me. He waddled back up the stairs with a trunk in his arms. "Here we are!" he opened up the trunk and pulled out a map, a compass, and a large key. "This map will take us right there." he said
" whats with the physical map and key for?" I asked
" so no one can steal it if there's no electricity it can't get hacked or erased" he responded
" well what ever works for you" I finished. He laid out the map and set down the compass, "it says we have to go east 2,700.6 kilometers, 1,040 kilometers north and 1,021 kilometers east. If we get four hours of sleep a day we can get there in a month with out having to traverse water." he explained.
"A Month!!? With only 4 hours of sleep?? That'll be damn near impossible!"I complained
"we will probably get there later than expected if we happen to over sleep," he said. We packed up all the supplies we would need onto a sled, finding provisions was not a problem since the town was abandoned and we had access to any houses or stores we needed.
