chapter one : hell

— ❦༺ ❦༻❦ —

"Melissa!"

I jolted up from my sleep when I heard my bedroom door fly open. The knob hit the wall beside it and made a loud 'bang' sound.

I turned to the doorway to see my older brother standing in the doorway, his eyes blazing with a wave of anger that shook me to the core, his clothes holding the permanent smell of alcohol, smoke, and drugs.

I gulped, noticing that he was livid, and scrambled out of bed. Not caring that I was in short shorts and a tank top.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" My brother, Kayden screamed, his tone sent shivers down my spine, and my heart dropped when I watched his right hand raised in the air. I screwed my shut eyes tightly, waiting for the impact, and when his fist collided with the side of the stomach, I had to bite my bottom lip to stop a whimper from escaping my lips.

"I asked you to get me beer yesterday," Kayden growled, "And just morning, I look into the fridge, and I see no beer."

My heart dropped. Oh. That's why he was lashing out, I totally forgot to run to the gas station to get him beer yesterday.

I bit my lip, cursing at myself for my stupid mistake. "I-I'm sorry, sir. I'll go get it now." I whimpered out.

"I don't want an apology. I want my goddamn beer!" He screamed once more, before stomping away. When he was out of my sight and downstairs, I scrambled to grab a jacket, before slipping on my worn, and torn shoes. I also grabbed the little money I had left, along with the fake ID Kayden made me get him beer a couple of months ago. I shoved my things in my pajamas shorts before rushing out of the house to the small gas station a couple of blocks away.

Since I didn't have a bike, nor a car, I had to walk. I didn't mind that much, it gave me enough time to clear my mind, and get prepared for what's to come. Though, it was oddly difficult to clear my mind since the side of my stomach was throbbing. Kayden always hit me hard, he never gave me light hits, they were always hard, and dominant.

I placed one of my hands upon the new bruise, and I started pressing my fingers down on the raw skin, wincing when the pain of the new coming bruise spread across my fragile skin.

I bit my lip to keep a whimper in, blinking rapidly to keep the tears in. My life was anything but fun and happy, it was happy three years ago, before my dad died, before my mom got into drugs, and before Kayden started hitting me. I was in a happy family, but it went down the drain the day my father went into his car and never came back.
