“Lola. Call...my wife. Tell her...I...love her.” Will managed to get out.
“No. Will you are not going to die! I will call her, but you hang in there, big brother.”
“What’s he look like, Joe?”
“Terry, he has cuts up and down his right side, and several that are hard to determine right this second.” The ambulance from two blocks away came around the corner. Terry did her best to stop any bleeding, but they’d have to transport him to the local medical center for triage. Savannah had at least three hospitals, all of which were more than capable of treating him.
The paramedics collared him, strapped him in, and headed out. Adam came running out as they were getting ready to pull off.
“What happened?”
“Jenkins happened. He jumped me, punching me in the gut and the face. Will went after him on foot. I heard tires squeal and an engine speed up. He was hit by a car. The same car we’ve been watching. I heard it before I saw it!”
Adam said something unintelligible under his breath. Then, “When I catch that jerk, I’m gonna..........”
“Will’s a fighter. Remember what he’s been through? He’s a fighter. That’s not a serious injury. He will have scans and then they will let us see him. Go back to your wife.”
“She’s beside herself after hearing those sirens. She won’t be okay until she knows what’s going on. Medics...it’s never completely out of their blood.”
Just then, Renee came out wrapped in a robe. “Adam, what happened?”
He went to her and hugged her. “Will was hit by a speeding car” was all he told her. The worry of his team’s faces said more, but Renee didn’t push just then. She just hugged him.
He ushered her back inside. It was not safe for her to be out here. He thought maybe they needed to move quicker. “I’ll be right there, sweetheart.”
“Joe, while Ben’s on the run, we need to get Renee out of here. She won’t be safe as long as he knows where she is. We shouldn’t use our cellphones unless necessary. I think Ben has technology that is able to listen in to our calls. We want to be with Will at the hospital. I don’t think it’s safe to either leave Renee or to have her be a sitting duck at the hospital. We need to go. Soon.” Adam’s fear for his wife was obvious.
Joe patted his arm. “Adam, I’m already on it. You and Renee will be heading to a new location. Matt will stay here with Will until Lola can get here. I’ll be along after I talk to the Chatham County Sheriff and the Savannah P.D. about this case. Terry’s driving. We won’t be able to communicate, so you have to beef up the security and keep watch. This is going to get difficult, but we’ll outwit this guy yet. Go comfort your wife and get packed. We move out in half an hour.”
. . . . .
A short while later they left. Terry told them where they were going. “We’re going to a location actually closer to home, but he won’t know where it is. There’s a house with enough bedrooms for all of us. Renee, we can’t call, e-mail or text. He’s has found a way to circumvent our communications somehow and knows our whereabouts. Joe will be behind us shortly. You are not to even go to the bathroom without Adam or myself. If he knows you’re alone, he will try to get you. Joe’s going to get Kathy and Joan a rental when they’re awake tomorrow so they can go back home. Ben doesn’t know that they were with us, so they should be safe.”
Renee couldn’t let go of Adam. This cannot be happening. “The happiest day of my life, and he’s doing this?” She started crying. She’d finally met, and married, a man who loved her, regardless of the past and the things that had happened, and Ben was trying to ruin it for her. “If I could get my hands on him, I’d ring his neck until he turned blue!” She punched the seat with the side of her hand.
