Chapter 13

Bago pa sila tuluyang makapasok ay hinawakan ko ang kamay ni Akki at pinapasok siya sa isang malaking cabinet.

"Dito ka lang, please. Huwag kang gagawa ng kahit na anong ingay." Sabi ko dito.

Hindi ko na siya hinintay sumagot at kaagad sinara ang pintuan.

"STOP WHERE YOU ARE!" Sigaw ng mga ito.

"HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE 'EM!"

"PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!"

Pinalibutan kami ng mga ito at nabalot ang kalooban ko ng takot. There is no way of escaping this. Wala akong nagawa kung hindi sumunod sa gusto nilang mangyari at dahan-dahang tinaas ang aking mga kamay.

"Touch me and you're fucking dead." Narinig kong babala ni Nova sa mga lalaki ngunit hindi nakinig ang mga ito.

Nagulat ako nang biglang baliin ni Nova ang kamay ng isa sa mga sundalong tinangkang hawakan siya sa balikat. Napasigaw sa sobrang sakit ang lalaki bago ito sinipa ni Nova sa dibdib. Napaurong ito bago nabuwal sa mga kasamahan niya.

Hindi ito nag-aksaya ng panahon at umatake sa mga armadong kalalakihan. He delivered another kick that connected to someone's jaw. Gumanti naman sa pag-atake ang mga sundalo ngunit naiiwasan lahat ni Nova ang mga ito. The next thing I knew, two guys came crashing on the walls. Bumagsak ang mga itong walang-malay sa sahig.

I honestly thought there was hope for us to escape until one of the soldiers manage to hit Nova at the back of his head. Hindi ito nakagalaw kaagad at bago pa ito maka-recover ay pinagtulung-tulungan na siyang i-restrain ng mga ito. Sinubukan pa niyang manlaban ngunit masyadong malalakas ang mga pumipigil sa kanya.

They gathered us in the living room and watched over us like hawks. Dinala nila si Nova sa amin at tinulak ng malakas causing him to fall over at my side. Bakas sa mukha nito ang galit. Bago pa ulit umatake si Nova ay tinutukan na kami ng mga ito ng baril.

"You guys are so lucky I didn't have my gun." Sabi ni Nova.

Nakarinig kami ng palakpak na nagmumula sa pintuan. Natuon dito ang atensyon namin.

"Oh my, oh my, what happened to this place?" Lumitaw ang isang babae at lumapit sa amin. "I'm actually impressed. Nagawa mong patumbahin ang lima sa mga pinakamahuhusay kong tauhan."

She commanded the soldiers to lower their guns.

Napasinghap si Azul.

"Kilala mo siya?" Bulong ko dito.

"Nandito rin sila sa bahay ko kahapon. They tried to thrash my place."

Then it hit me. "Napansin din naming maraming mga sundalo ang nagkalat sa bayan. Could these be them?"

Nagpalipat-lipat ang tingin ng babae sa amin. She has an almost eerie presence that makes me uncomfortable.

"Let me introduce myself, I am Victoria Ivanov, I am a scientist researching about unexplainable occurrences in the world. We've heard reports of a loud noise coming from this area so we have decided to check things out here." Kumunot ang noo nito. "Alam niyo ba kung bakit kami nandito ngayon?"

Walang nagtangkang sumagot sa amin.

"I'll tell you anyways. There are beings that gather in these waters every two years during the Doluna Festival. Things that were only thought as myths and legends. Things that are only seen on books and fairytales." Nag-focus ang mga mata nito sa amin. "So tell me, who among you guys believe in mermaids?"

My heart skipped a beat just by the mention of that word. Alam kaya nila ang tungkol kay Akki?

"B-Bakit mo sinasabi sa amin ang mga 'to?" Tanong ni Azul.

"Because I think..." Nag-pause ito. "Let me correct that.... I know that you people know more than the rest of this town's population."

"We have no clue on what you're talking about! Tinatawag silang fairytales for a reason!" Pagdadahilan ni Azul.

Lalong sumiryoso ang anyo nito.

"You'll have to do better than that if you plan on deceiving me. I can tell from the look in your eyes that you are lying. We have years of research in our hands and we have coast guards searching these waters for them. For some unknown reason, they seem to gather here during this specific time of the year. As you can tell, we are taking advantage of that opportunity to catch one. However, they seem to slip away from our fingers each time... But not this year."

Napaisip ako. So yung mga coastguards na nag-iikot dito tuwing Doluna Festival is actually their men? All this time naghahanap sila ng sirena?

Biglang natuon ang atensyon nito kay Mich.

"So tell me, are you a mermaid?" Tanong ni Victoria.

Parang hindi inasahan ni Mich ang tanong nito.

"H-Hindi po." Sabi niya.

"No... Of course you're not honey."

"Huwag mo siyang idamay dito!" Sigaw ko ngunit parang wala itong narinig.

"Walang kinalaman ang babae na 'yan sa hinahanap niyo. They're telling the truth." Biglang singit ni Nova.

Natuon ang atensyon ni Victoria dito.

"I think it's a misunderstanding." Sabi niya. "I think what your searching for is in the forest. There are sightings in that area about a woman."

Nagtaka ako.

I am very thankful kay Nova sa pag-alis niya kay Mich ng atensyon ni Victoria but why is he doing this? He tried killing the mermaid a while ago so why is he leading them away from here?

Nilapitan nito si Nova at pinanliitan ng mga mata.

"So you do know something." Parang kinikilala nito si Nova. "You look familiar. Your face bears the resemblance of two people that I once knew. Are you perhaps, the Devil Child?"
