The thoughts of home calmed Dan's drunken mind. He suffered from social anxiety and rarely went outside but that night he realised that human interaction was what he craved the most. He loved attention, at least he did when he was drunk. Staying away from society and social events was what kept him from hurting himself. His feelings were fragile, as was he.
While stumbling home from the wedding venue that he was in fifteen minutes prior to this moment, he was dizzily searching around the streets of London for a familiar face. It was the kind of wedding where the bride was a friend of one of your parents cousins so Dan knew almost no one there. The alcohol is what helped him talk to people but it never did him any good.
As Dan stumbled along the path, his vision blurred and his tie becoming undone, he was desperately searching for someone. He turned around to make sure he wasn't being stalking or something along the lines of that when he saw a face that calmed him. It was Lily, a girl he had met at the party.
"Are you alright there, Daniel?" She asked with a thick northern accent. Dan responded with a series of groans and pained noises. "One glass too many? Oh well, you can come back to the flat if you'd like!" Lily offered to which Dan attempted to accept with a dizzy nod.
Lily had to practically drag Dan's long lanky body to the flat almost a mile away. When they both finally reached the front door, Lily pressed down hardly on the buzzer. The door was answered by a woman who looked to be about thirty years older than Lily.
"Who's this, Lily?" The woman inquired, also with a northern accent. "Don't worry Catherine. He was at the wedding, he's only a friend." Lily chuckled. Dan tried to smile but his body wasn't cooperating. Catherine then realised the situation and welcomed Dan in.
Dan walked up exactly forty seven steps of stairs before he was able to stand on his two feet properly, he counted in an attempt to become more sober. He followed the younger girl into what seemed to be a lounge where he saw two men who looked to be in their late twenties and mid thirties playing Mario Kart while laughing and swearing at each other.
Dan meekly stepped further into the room which allowed him to see the dull walls and boxes everywhere. He gulped and took a closer look at the two boys. One had more of a masculine face with a little amount of hair, he looked to be the older of the two. The other had jet black hair that was styled with a fringe. His face seemed softer and kinder.
"Martyn! Phil! This is Daniel." Lily announced to the boys. "Not now, Lily. Phil's in first and I have to beat him." The masculine boy said. Dan felt put of place, he was scared and was becoming more and more sober by the second. His anxiety started to kick in and he began to hyperventilate quietly. This was why he relied on alcohol for social situations.
All sounds became indistinct in Dan's mind until the black haired boy jumped into the air with glee, with his tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth between his teeth. The presence of this Phil character made Dan feel slightly more at ease and he didn't know why.
Phil turned around after his sweet victory to celebrate by teasing his older brother and he made eye contact with the nervous boy standing in the doorway. Martyn stood up, rolled his eyes at Phil and laughed.
"Daniel needs somewhere to stay so I thought that there would be some room here." Lily stated as Dan and Phil exchanged glances for about three seconds. Dan gulped and bit his lip as he looked up from the ground.
"Dear cousin, there's not much room but I'm sure we can find somewhere." Phil said to Lily positively. He looked at Dan and laughed awkwardly.
He held out his hand waiting for Dan to shake it. Dan hesitated which he immediately regretted but he then shook Phil's hand shyly.
After feeling Phil's touch Dan was at ease immediately. He looked up at Phil, although Dan was taller he lacked confidence so he tended to slouch, and pursed his lips with a slight smile. Phil acknowledged Dan and with a laugh said, "Hi I'm Phil. You're looking for a place to stay?"
