Chapter 14

âSo that was weird,â Syd said, her voice sounding a little too smug for my liking.

I flopped back on my hotel bed, keeping the phone against my ear as I sighed. âWhat was weird?â

âYou. Wes. Sparks.â

I quirked a brow. âWhat are you talking about?â

âOh come on.â I didnât have to see her to know that she was rolling her eyes. âThe last time I saw you two together, he kind of hated your guts. Although, now that I think about it, maybe he was fighting his feelings even then. He did get irrationally angry whenever you and Ian were together.â

âYou have no idea what youâre talking about,â I said, using my most blasé tone of voice.

âDonât I? He wanted to kick Noahâs ass for being mean to you, he rushed to your side when your mystery sibling showed up and he spent the night at your house.â

âNothing happened. He was staying at my place. Thatâs all,â I said, wincing slightly, feeling like I was lying.

âYou sure thatâs it?â

âYes,â I snapped but I was lying. I couldnât tell her the truth. No way. As close as I was with Syd, I couldnât explain it to her. I couldnât tell her that heâd been real and genuine and nice and having him with me through everything that happened had been kind of...great.

Oh, and he slept in my bed that night.

And when I woke up in the morning, before I quietly snuck out, I sat there and very creepily stared at his sleeping face for a good five minutes.

Like a stalker.

âWell, thatâs probably for the best, anyway. I mean, a relationship between the two of you would never work. Your dad would lose his mind if he found out you were into Wes. Youâd get fired, you wouldnât get the money and your mother would have to deal with her own issues for once. The world as you know it would end.â Syd paused for a second while I tried to gather enough functioning brain cells to convince her that nothing was going on. âI think you should go for it.â

âSyd, youâre lucky youâve got your looks going for you because there isnât a whole lot going on upstairs.â

âI have a 4.0, bitch.â

âAw, thatâs sweet. Do you want a gold star to go with it?â

âFine, ignore what Iâm saying, pretend you have no idea what Iâm talking about but I was there, Grace. I saw the way you two acted together, the way you unconsciously leaned towards him, the way your eyes got all glazed whenever he flashed that incredibly sexy smile of his. You might be able to lie to yourself but you canât lie to me.â

âDrop this, Syd,â I ground out through clenched teeth.

âFine,â she said breezily. âHow was the show tonight?â

âOh you know, everyone was amazing and I was the perfect little circus act, as per usual. It was great.â

âAnd by âgreatâ you mean...â

I sighed. âTense. Horribly, unbearably tense.â

âI take it you havenât said anything to your dad about his illegitimate love child?â

âNope. I just canât think of a good way to bring it up, you know? How does one start a conversation like that? Oh hey dad, did you sleep okay? By the way, I met the brother youâve hidden from me for my entire life. You going to finish that bagel?â I rubbed my forehead, trying to erase the pressure that had permanently settled there.
