This means that without every feeling really down or sad you will never know what it feels like to be happy. You have to fail before you can succeed.
So I have a personal experience that this quote fits into. Me and shatteredsugar had to do this science experiment and we had to build a car that would go 5 meters. We had a great car but it went less than one meter. If we had kept it like that we would have failed science, but we didn't give up and we built a new car that exceeded the expectations. So don't get up just because things are not going well today. Your star will shine some time.
