Chapter 9

I searched the room. Looking for a way out. I felt the door Katelyn entered through. Twisting the door handle, I realised the door doesn't open. I started hammering on the doors and walls, screaming for someone, anyone to get me out. "Please ... let me out ..." I whimpered. I turned round and slid against the wall. Head in my hands I started crying. Real sobs escaped my lips and tears rolled down by the bucket loads. This is what it's like to cry, I thought to myself. For the past couple of weeks I haven't been able to feel a thing. Not even happiness of Conner's improvement. No sadness for Katelyn's death.

Why is it every time I feel something it's with Him?

This thing that was invading my mind and soul was the only thing that kept my emotions in check. Dammit Brooklyn get your head together!!! I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand and looked around the room again. The room was bare except for the single chair that was situated in the middle. With all my strength I stood up and walked over to the chair to study it more closely. I slid my hand across the varnished oak. Any bumps or dips may help me figure this room out. I stood behind the chair and bent down. Looking at the back I found a wired symbol carved in the wood. I stroked my finger through the carving. I knew this shape. The clover in the middle, the ribbon like cross and the oval shape. "The locket ..." I whispered. I reached towards my own locket around my neck, undoing the chain and holding it in my fingers. Looking at both pieces I could see the similarities more clearly. Holding the locket next to the carving I noticed a glow. The gold light was seeping out the clover shape inside the chair. Keeping the locket in place peeked into the clover and found it carried on through the chair. What surprised me was that the golden light was not coming from this land. The land inside the chair was a dull place. The ground was an ash in colour; sky was covered in black clouds. "What is this place?" I asked myself, only to get an answer from behind me. "It's His realm Brooklyn! That is where you will end up if you keep believing him!" I spun to see Katelyn knelt down beside me.

"What the hell Katelyn?!"

"Listen brook I haven't got much time he is probably trying to find me right now. But listen, look into the realm, see that castle, the dark grey brick ruins?" she pointed to a pile of dark grey rubble in the centre of the land and I nodded, "Inside the ruins is a book a book that contains the names of all the people er-the shadow has kill or is planning to. But normal people can't get through the void, which is an empty space between reality and the realm. I'm the only person to survive, but he is after you."

He's after me? OMG why me? "Wait, why me?"

Something crossed like pain struck across her face and she cringed away as in trying to get away. "Kate ... Katelyn!?!?! Don't go!"

"Brook I will be back I promise!"

"Kate please I don't understand!"

"I promise ..." she whispered then her whole body vanished into thin air.

"Katelyn?? KATELYN?!?!" I screamed, why did everyone leave me!! Why couldn't I just get out of this hell hole! Holding the locket close to my heart I walked over to the corner of the room. Pulling me knees up to my face I sat and waited for anything, just anything to happen. Closing my eyes I imagined being back in reality; seeing Conner smiling at me, Katelyn making gagging noises behind us with all our other friends, running around like lunatics on hot summer days ...

"Why did everything have to change?" I mumbled, tears stinging my eyes. Quickly rubbing the tears from my eyes I looked around the room one more time, placing the locket around my neck I settled down and closed my eyes trying to relax ...

"BROOK!" I sat up screaming seeing Conner standing next to the bed.

"OMG Conner! You trying to bloody kill me!"

"Sorry hun, but you've been out for hours. I thought they had killed you!" It was meant to be a joke, but neither of us laughed. He was smiling, and so was I ... okay I'm pissed right?? I haven't been happy in weeks! "Hey Con, wanna go out?? Am sick of this room!"

"Sure ... where you wanna go?" he held out his hand, swinging my leg in cast off the bed I took it. He laughed as I made a face at the crutches he handed me. "Hey there not that bad!"

"Says you, you've just got off them!" he childishly stuck his tongue out and ran when I tried to kick him. Chuckling I went out the door and hurried after him.

"OI, since when did you become a runner?!" I shouted at him.

"Since I found out I could be faster than you!"

"OoOoO sounds like a challenge! You wait till I get out this cast boy, we're so gonna have a race." He came running down the hall, taking my legs from underneath me and picked me up leaning his forehead against mine. "Bring it on!" he said before leaning in and kissed me.

"Now come on Brook, we need to do this!" Arizona said. I was back in the hospital bed, you can say I was sulking because I was. Full on pout mode. Conner was laughing next to me, giving him evils I then looked back at the nurse. "I know, but ... I only wanted to walk, or hobble, around for a bit." Conner snorted and started laughing again, "Oh shut up you!"

"I'm sorry Brook, but you sound like a 2 year old!" Arizona snapped her fingers to grab my attention, "Brooklyn!," she said, clearly annoyed now, her expression was tired and her mouth was turned unattractively down, "We need to get this cast back in place. Its moved and that could cause some permanent damage." I sighed, "Okay okay, I'll stay still!" she smiled and started working on my leg. Laying my head back on the pillow I looked at Conner, who was still chuckling, and smiled. Your never alone Brooklyn, I love you and I'll never let you down. A voice whispered. It wasn't Conner's voice, it was His voice. Keeping the panic in my eyes hidden I twined my fingers together with Conner's and leant against his shoulder.

Never alone ... never alone ... never alone.
