Jewel's Point of View

----------------------------

I heard footsteps coming into my room and inwardly groaned.

"J, wake up," somebody said. It was a girl's voice. Mom.

"Go away, Mom. Five more minutes," I mumbled.

"Um, I'm not Mom for one, and for two, do you want to go into the forest?" It was Katy. My twin sister. We called each other J and K. It was sorta funny to me. "JK" as in "Just kidding". Wait, did she say forest?

"WHAT?!" I exclaimed, leaning up.

"Don't wake Mom and Dad up! Get your stuff. What I mean is, get your weapons," K said with a smile. I knew what she meant by weapons. Our Mom and Dad bought us weapons, but for emergencies only. My favorite weapon was a knife. I can't believe they expected us to listen. Well, me mostly.

Last night I went out to the forest and knocked on Katy's window to come with me, but she was too tired I guess.

I got up and walked over to my closet. Inside was my knife and shield. I hated the shield because it was always in my way. Ironic, right?

I decided to dress later and started making my bed when I heard a scream come from my sister's room. I dropped the covers and rushed into her tidy room.

"What is it?" I asked, breathlessly.

"Someone was sitting on my bed," K said.

Who could be sitting on her bed? A ghost? I hated the thought of a ghost sitting on K's bed. I didn't want to be in here anymore.

"Okay. I'm going back to my room," I said.

I shut her door behind me and walked down the brightly lit hallway filled with sunshine. It kind of made me feel better. Maybe K was just seeing things. Opening the door, I shut it behind me and picked my knife up off of the ground.

"Hello there," a voice said. My head shot up with my knife poised to kill. There, on my bed, my poorly made bed, was a women that wasn't my mother. I screamed in fear and backed up to the now shut door.

"Wh-Who are you?" I asked.

"I'm Lauren. Your godmother," she said.

  I don't have a godmother, I thought.

I felt the door handle turn and I backed away from the door. Katy was standing there. Her face had no emotion.

"What do you want?" Katy asked.

"To tell you something. You two are powerful. Here, take these necklaces," Lauren took out two necklaces from who-knows-where, and handed us each one.

I looked at the pendent at the bottom. It wasn't really a pendent, it was more of a rock. I had a red rock with... flames? Flames were engraved in the now glowing rock. Why was it glowing? And why were we powerful? Who is this lady?!

"Thank you," Katy said after a couple minutes.

"Thanks," I said, reluctantly.

"You're welcome. Here's a map for you. I need you to come to the palace. You'll have to face the dangers in the woods. Good luck." Then, she disappeared.

I had so many questions popping into my head. There was a palace? Where was this palace? And how are we, Katy and Jewel Wonders, powerful? We were thirteen years old!

I grabbed the map and studied it as Katy walked out of my room. It was a pretty old map, made of parchment and yellowed a bit. It led us through the woods in our backyard and to the palace. Katy and I were never allowed to travel too far back, anyways. I always thought it was because our father disappeared. That's right, we live with our step-father who's never there for us. I missed my dad.

I sighed and grabbed my knife and shield. Reminiscing about my dad was never going to get me anywhere. I never actually knew what happened to him. It was like a very blurry dream. It was always the same one. But I didn't know how to believe it.

Grabbing my leather bag that I used to hunt and a camoflauge backpack, I began packing. I changed from my pajamas into a pair of my favorite, most comfortable jeans, and a John Deere t-shirt. I then put my "special usage" belt on that had a holder for my knife and put my knife in it. I threw my shield in my closet and ran into the kitchen quietly, grabbing canned foods such as corn, green beans, spinach, and soup. Then, I grabbed a baggy and filled it with ice, placing canned pineapple and some green apples in the bottom of my bag and wrapped them in a towel.

I then got a water filter and four water bottles and placed them in my backpack too. As you could see, my backpack was mainly for food. I filled another four baggies with ice, wrapped them in a towel and shoved them in my bag, placing a container of ham and turkey on top.

I threw on a heavy coat, put my leather game back on across my shoulders, and heaved my backpack up on my back. I climbed out my window and down to the side of the house where I was to meet my sister. It was time to go to the woods.

"Ready?" Katy asked. I nodded.

"Yes," I said weakly. A tear ran down my face. K walked over and wiped it away with her finger.

"Let's go," she said quietly. She gave me a hug and we ran towards the woods. When we were in, we were engulfed by darkness.
