This is the sad ending.
Dear Natalia,
My name is Jesse Hooper. I was your father's commander. Let me tell you, he was a brave, kind man. It was a pleasure to serve with him. I only wish he could have lived to read all the letters you sent him.Your father was a prisoner of war for seven years. We informed your mother of the progress, but she decided not to share this with you. I find it only right to officially inform you of your father's death. He held out bravely for an incredible time. He truly was a hero.
It was his closest friend, Colonel Williams, who sent those letters to you every year. Don't be discouraged; every day your father was with us, he bragged about you. Colonel Williams did his pride and love for you justice in his correspondence.
It is always a terrible job to be the bearer of such bad news. There is no way to soften the blow. We will soon send his personal belongings. A memorial service is being arranged. You will be informed of all proceedings.
Sincerely,
Admiral Hooper
