Declaimer: I do not own Natsume's book of friends, nor do I own the characters. I give full credit to the author.

Please note: I'm going with what Natsume looks like in the manga rather than in the anime.

-Your P.O.V.-

Yokai.
Have you heard of them?
They go by many a name,
Ayakashi,
Spirits,
Ghosts,
Monsters.

Many people think they're just folklore. Or stores people make up to get attention.

But
I can see them.

To this very day I'm still called strange, creepy, crazy, and many more crude things. But one name always hurt more than the others, 'liar'.

Why do I hate it so much? Is it because I never lied about what saw? Who knows?

I was a very lonely child, but the story I'm about to tell you isn't about that. It's the story of how I became happy, and the people that made that happen.

To know my story, you have to start from the being. Many years ago.

When I was ten I lost my parents, so I moved in with my aunt. She was nice, but I could tell she was disturbed.

My aunt said she believed me, but sometimes I could see in her eyes that she didn't.

Before I mustered up the courage to confront her, she died. Being the only family I had left, I was going to be put in an orphanage.

But a friend of my aunt came and adopted me. His family name was Tanuma. Mister Tanuma had a son named Kaname. (Mister Tanuma is the priest. I'm calling his son by his first name to help prevent confusion between the two Tanuma's.)

Kaname was tall compared to me. It was probably do to the fact that he's a guy, but it still bothered me.

I was in the same grade as Kaname at the time. He and his father welcomed me with open arms, even though they knew about my sight. I was more than grateful.

I didn't want to bother them with any weird rumors, so I asked them not to say anything.

Kaname's response was,"If that's what you want. But I don't think you have to hide it. There's thi-" I cut him off.

"No. It's fine. I would hate for any weird rumors to start because of me. And if there's someone out there I can trust with my secret, I would like to tell them myself," I said.

"Anyway, are you excited to got to school tomorrow?" He asked.

"Honestly, no. I've never really liked school," I confessed, "At least we're in the same class." We stood there in an awkward silence for awhile until Kaname couldn't handle it and asked, "I'm going to go for a walk, would you like to join me?" "Sure," I smiled.

On our walk, we passed various yokai. I heard some of them whispering, "Have you heard? Natsume-sama has a fire breathing dragon!"

"No way! I heard he has red horns like the devil!"

"Natsume?" I thought out loud. "Hmm? Did you say something?" Kaname asked.

"No. I didn't."

The next day, I got to school early, so Kaname could show me around the building. "It's huge!!" I exclaimed. He just chuckled in response.
